<r t="10.74">i guess i'll start</r>
<r t="13.6">and</r>
<r t="17.4">so i'm really that is sort going to actually be reading a lot of that</r>
<r t="21.74">so this is that so</r>
<r t="25.59">first i should introduce myself my name is mike ford i'm a you know foundation</r>
<r t="30.97">member i got involved in you know with the women's outreach program in two thousand</r>
<r t="37.86">eleven and i and contributing chick you know since then i'm also working on my</r>
<r t="44.42">master's in computer science in chicago so this talk is basically about a group that</r>
<r t="49.78">jim campbell who is not documentation contributor</r>
<r t="54.26">in you know</r>
<r t="55.35">i started in chicago</r>
<r t="57.73">and also for so i'd like to explain the title generally when i talk about</r>
<r t="63.87">free and open source software i call it three the free software can or for</r>
<r t="69.8">us community are the flask</r>
<r t="73.23">well i'm calling at the open source community</r>
<r t="77.27">because in chicago we have a tiny for yourself</r>
<r t="82.67">and so in order for us</r>
<r t="86.12">to our reach out be and our small twenty member community we needed to learn</r>
<r t="94.48">how to engage people who we have things in common but by maybe didn't embrace</r>
<r t="100.51">all of the all the</r>
<r t="103.89">the ideals</r>
<r t="106.12">i that free software this</r>
<r t="108.8">so</r>
<r t="111.16">so has a chicago is the third largest city you know</r>
<r t="118.2">so we have a population of almost people</r>
<r t="122.31">and we have a pretty large czech by our free software community address that is</r>
<r t="129.52">really small</r>
<r t="131.27">so when we were starting out a lot of what the challenge that we face</r>
<r t="135.74">ways</r>
<r t="136.56">how do we get people to be interested in free software how do you know</r>
<r t="141.52">the community around give when most people have never use windex</r>
<r t="147.13">or have heard of free software</r>
<r t="151.17">so</r>
<r t="152.42">we started out</r>
<r t="155.21">basically looking at our community</r>
<r t="157.48">and seen what is the larger community that surrounds free software which are and we</r>
<r t="164.15">found that we have three basic groups of people who were knowledgeable about free software</r>
<r t="169.76">and to might possibly be interested in learning about you know</r>
<r t="174.37">and</r>
<r t="175.8">so are the three basic ribs we have</r>
<r t="178.93">we have a pretty active python community and we have a hacker space with a</r>
<r t="185.49">lot of people who tend to run macro last</r>
<r t="189.1">and we have a nonprofit it's hardware recycling</r>
<r t="195.65">that installed linux on laptops and dot tops and either don't make seven or sells</r>
<r t="204.11">them at low cost</r>
<r t="205.64">so the i community is we have around thousand active members of the pipeline on</r>
<r t="214.49">that's a sad often times they turn round hole</r>
<r t="219.6">so they don't use linux</r>
<r t="224.04">but they have a lot of knowledge that can help them to learn about linux</r>
<r t="228.19">so that the basically the learning curve for that is not just it would be</r>
<r t="233.83">for someone coming from microsoft</r>
<r t="238.49">also they a lot of the people the pipelines maybe ten should use both front</r>
<r t="242.82">end and back and development and so they have a lot of understand things like</r>
<r t="247.46">line and concept second hope to become active you know</r>
<r t="256.94">so</r>
<r t="258.37">i hope so</r>
<r t="260.81">also there are people from the python community for involved in the next one of</r>
<r t="266.22">the all this in</r>
<r t="268.75">the chicago area in the suburbs is run by a number of the type and</r>
<r t="274.1">community and then six of our members are actually chicago python community members as well</r>
<r t="287.14">so we also have a packer space</r>
<r t="291.2">with around two hundred members that actually probably i think that's the official number and</r>
<r t="296.84">they probably have actually i five</r>
<r t="301.12">and we have a they have a lot of a printer which is aegean you</r>
<r t="306.42">project</r>
<r t="307.58">people use wonder in state for their projects and also they there are people who</r>
<r t="314.34">are using free software but maybe not necessarily</r>
<r t="319.41">there is also a pretty active people were hacking on michael microcontroller projects</r>
<r t="327.49">and they</r>
<r t="330.51">the people who go to the hyperspace range from startup see you know is to</r>
<r t="336.25">hobbyists to just come in and how come we can't</r>
<r t="340.54">no they mentioned there's also for each card which are is the is i'm not</r>
<r t="347.11">a you know that recycles computers and one's a installs want to look next</r>
<r t="357.42">and they also have weekly have nights but they're actually acting on their website which</r>
<r t="361.29">i think is in java script</r>
<r t="364.41">so we wanted to create</r>
<r t="367.66">i community problem you know and there we have to be people in chicago who</r>
<r t="374.58">work on you know a G able</r>
<r t="378.29">right here</r>
<r t="380.19">have the baroness at least and chris webber also decided that would help us</r>
<r t="394.52">so</r>
<r t="395.7">this actually lives in a different city so he was just five you often to</r>
<r t="400.07">help us a but in the two people most organisation trivia J</r>
<r t="410.49">you probably does most of the he does our website updates and a lot of</r>
<r t="417.22">our social media posts</r>
<r t="420.83">so initially we decided that we would have meetings where we would go to the</r>
<r t="426.07">newcomers tutorial and try to teach people to happen you know and are most of</r>
<r t="431.96">the meetings i was the only person who actually had a</r>
<r t="435.05">and i found that</r>
<r t="437.97">me myself trying to teach twelve people to use G H build up once</r>
<r t="442.55">different distributions was it with choose difficult i could actually really be productive in the</r>
<r t="448.11">whole so because of that</r>
<r t="452.32">we moved trying to have a broader for</r>
<r t="455.46">for the group</r>
<r t="459.15">i'm not saying that we encountered a lot first with that P we people</r>
<r t="466.74">generally when we brought up you know people had a negative reaction</r>
<r t="472.38">and on a people would say things like you know thank you know unit easily</r>
<r t="478.16">this they don't care about their user</r>
<r t="482.22">people didn't like you know three</r>
<r t="485.57">and thinking chicago for example we have are some people there who is that what</r>
<r t="493.17">we hit you know we have to switch to access see because we're using old</r>
<r t="498.76">hardware we can run get a three on it why don't you care about the</r>
<r t="502.8">people we're donating use machines to</r>
<r t="508.81">and also because we had a manual focus just on you know people seem to</r>
<r t="515.68">see as that's kind of</r>
<r t="517.39">and maybe that's partly my fault on having to just as people were only focus</r>
<r t="522.98">on you know</r>
<r t="524.29">we're not really concerned about building a community around free software in general</r>
<r t="531.5">another issue that we ran into where was a</r>
<r t="536.12">diversity issues</r>
<r t="539.91">we</r>
<r t="542.89">and</r>
<r t="545.72">so i</r>
<r t="547.09">so we actually and it out of putting a diversity statement on our website at</r>
<r t="553.16">a certain point in time and the main reason why we ended up doing that</r>
<r t="560.34">was because</r>
<r t="565.77">and well at the women some people did not like the fact that i was</r>
<r t="570.83">representing the which is</r>
<r t="574.42">and so i ran into some issues with people being anything that i was in</r>
<r t="581.23">a position of authority as a woman in the past community and so we did</r>
<r t="588.16">end up having to diversity statement and we sort of came up with a way</r>
<r t="594.14">to deal with people on it's actually pretty common in chicago for people to i</r>
<r t="600.02">for people to feel that</r>
<r t="602.04">women are not involved in the next because it doesn't interest</r>
<r t="607.04">and</r>
<r t="607.92">so</r>
<r t="610.55">one thing that we've tried to do is have discussions with those people we tried</r>
<r t="615.99">to engage them and keep them in our community and we have some failures doing</r>
<r t="622.26">that</r>
<r t="623.03">and we did have one person laughter</r>
<r t="627.85">but it's</r>
<r t="628.85">we tried to be as inclusive as parts</r>
<r t="631.65">and</r>
<r t="633.01">so in general what we feel is if someone doesn't agree with that adversity balls</r>
<r t="638.1">that's totally fine</r>
<r t="640.05">and we welcome that person to be community anyway</r>
<r t="643.91">just that people don't for us for having the balls</r>
<r t="654.45">so</r>
<r t="656.49">the basic way that we deal with that issue in</r>
<r t="660.98">we've tried to engage the larger linux community and we found other people were sort</r>
<r t="666.08">of in senior positions in the linux community more willing to speak up and support</r>
<r t="670.51">of diversity and that's kind of changed data to a lot of</r>
<r t="674.58">a lot of the people involved in our group</r>
<r t="678.48">and we try to give people a reasonable chance to talk about how they feel</r>
<r t="684.3">about first i think ye</r>
<r t="687.28">you know not everyone has the same how political ideas like</r>
<r t="692.85">so i tried to</r>
<r t="695.29">try to engage people and give them a chance to talk about what they feel</r>
<r t="698.93">is important that we do and conversations what we're so productive</r>
<r t="705.75">and</r>
<r t="706.57">i do emphasise in this</r>
<r t="709.82">so we do things like try to use just for like which some people like</r>
<r t="716.04">that that's important talk</r>
<r t="719.63">and we do have maybe writes to i have expressed about this</r>
<r t="727.69">click there are but</r>
<r t="732.63">so</r>
<r t="734.31">the one that we ended up with is we have at our meetings one someone</r>
<r t="739.25">the first two hours we have a harness and we invite members of the community</r>
<r t="744.56">this sometimes people will approach us</r>
<r t="748.68">ask you talked some topics</r>
<r t="750.81">that is that we all the topics are related to free software and since gemini</r>
<r t="756.98">our we don't community members we tend to talk about things that are happening you</r>
<r t="761.65">know so when we go to know that will usually</r>
<r t="767.3">give people gonna talk about it so that people kind of feel like they're involved</r>
<r t="773.01">you know what's go what's going on</r>
<r t="776.12">so we want people to feel like</r>
<r t="779.65">we are part of the fast but at the same time they can be in</r>
<r t="784.51">the gonna buy belong to our organisation and then we spend the remaining three hours</r>
<r t="790.95">of our meeting sorry one</r>
<r t="796.32">the remaining three hours we have</r>
<r t="799.1">and</r>
<r t="802.13">generally we invite people to bring whatever project they're working on</r>
<r t="805.92">so some people drink it all related projects</r>
<r t="810.05">okay</r>
<r t="812.16">no some people drink they don't they do projects and some people just bring whatever</r>
<r t="817.22">they are working on at the time</r>
<r t="819.83">we hold our meetings at the local hacker space</r>
<r t="823.28">at this point we're affiliated with chicago</r>
<r t="827.62">so we have a share need a page we have a lapel once in the</r>
<r t="831.64">chicago area where the only linux related in the city</r>
<r t="837.07">we have a social media presents that we actively poster twitter little plus</r>
<r t="843.52">i tended to see a we actually</r>
<r t="846.66">and we have a website that we maintain a mailing list</r>
<r t="852.47">there's you channel and then the me to start</r>
<r t="858.25">so what we provide for members</r>
<r t="862.12">we try to provide an informal space for people to talk about three</r>
<r t="868.37">software related topics</r>
<r t="870.56">and we try to provide people with some tech support so we have people who</r>
<r t="875.65">use linux or we try to install it if they aren't you know we try</r>
<r t="880.56">to help them or how</r>
<r t="882.77">and we have an o'reilly book just now so people can purchase textbooks you know</r>
<r t="889.31">and also they do reviews they can get</r>
<r t="891.52">chequebooks for free and then we specifically try to help with again so help you</r>
<r t="897.84">work problem G H bill</r>
<r t="900.43">learn out right</r>
<r t="905.44">so some of the talks that we had we had an intro to you max</r>
<r t="909.77">talk to chris webber gave and we went that michael there about came and talked</r>
<r t="914.94">with about our system D</r>
<r t="917.91">do you confident she studies open show showed and then i do what</r>
<r t="923.6">is that we had in brussels</r>
<r t="926.01">and we have a lot of times</r>
<r t="928.42">but in general maybe half or two thirds of them are gonna like it</r>
<r t="934.63">some of the project that people have worked on and we have one guy respond</r>
<r t="939.52">working on the G object bindings go programming language i didn't work on documentation and</r>
<r t="946.38">we had someone who are actually does that models</r>
<r t="951.23">i don't know does a lot of our video he recording for a free and</r>
<r t="957.42">open source work for inferences and so he was working on the system so we</r>
<r t="962.21">can streamline video and then i worked on documents we've had someone working on you</r>
<r t="970.36">know music and i'm working on some more right point had from that</r>
<r t="975.41">another percent working on this decay bindings</r>
<r t="979.73">we've also had thank you some of our members become involved in we are just</r>
<r t="987.14">about a two are actually participating in P W</r>
<r t="993.72">we see more people who are interested in you know open to the idea of</r>
<r t="998.98">using you know we don't get people generally have kind of move past</r>
<r t="1004.48">a pass</r>
<r t="1006.48">a huge you know and they</r>
<r t="1010.87">we see a lot of people who actually</r>
<r t="1014.37">actually what are the things that it really big difference was the introduction of fast</r>
<r t="1019.7">and as much as i hate to say that was something that people would completely</r>
<r t="1025.29">given up i'm going on using you know it was something that need them feel</r>
<r t="1030.84">that</r>
<r t="1033.1">so it actually have made a pretty big difference in terms of perception our community</r>
<r t="1037.79">east i don't some of our members also become friends</r>
<r t="1043.08">the community of people who we have all we actually have a lot of systems</r>
<r t="1048.32">administrators</r>
<r t="1049.83">cool come to our because which i was actually kind of surprised about actually didn't</r>
<r t="1055.3">realise that a lot of sysadmins use linux on the desktop for</r>
<r t="1060.29">and so what i was trying to teach people to cool for development in what</r>
<r t="1064.2">they're like an extra</r>
<r t="1066.38">i thought it was because i was a student make been using linux problem turn</r>
<r t="1070.77">turned out that actually a lot of them were not about</r>
<r t="1075.51">so i was surprised but i suppose</r>
<r t="1078.74">like to</r>
<r t="1080.02">we do have a lot of hype on community members</r>
<r t="1083.7">we have students from local universities to come and the hackers</r>
<r t="1090.63">so what we found is as we've kind of moved</r>
<r t="1094.93">having a slightly broader for this</r>
<r t="1097.47">that people are able to sort of contextualized you know basically it last as a</r>
<r t="1104.62">project</r>
<r t="1105.88">that is working they don't see as are working in isolation and making decisions</r>
<r t="1112.61">just based on what we want to do they see us as people who are</r>
<r t="1117.42">contributing to the larger</r>
<r t="1120.68">as well</r>
<r t="1124.4">also we found that people who may know something about free software for example allows</r>
<r t="1131.45">users</r>
<r t="1134.24">but i don't really know much about you know more about linux desktop</r>
<r t="1140.24">are able to express interest from to our meetings and learn some things without feeling</r>
<r t="1146.66">like i have to be axed</r>
<r t="1150.51">so in the past we plan doing meetings monthly since september and to be as</r>
<r t="1155.87">i said we started out with four members we have about fifteen people who are</r>
<r t="1159.59">actively engaged in organising is</r>
<r t="1163.7">and then we have various other people from not sure how many met members of</r>
<r t="1169.44">all</r>
<r t="1170.12">it's probably right</r>
<r t="1173.46">and we've also found that the community feedback that we've gotten have become a lot</r>
<r t="1178.12">pots</r>
<r t="1179.98">so that's all i feel is even though in some ways i feel like we're</r>
<r t="1184.62">not really have much to you know directly we are making a difference in the</r>
<r t="1190.34">king in our in terms of how is see so</r>
<r t="1197.11">so our plans for the coming year are owns some of our members want to</r>
<r t="1204.12">start doing some packing only events</r>
<r t="1206.71">we're going to do you to work that how we should and building the community</r>
<r t="1211.99">and encouraging and supporting interesting often channel</r>
<r t="1218.3">so</r>
<r t="1220.22">you said i should talk to about starting</r>
<r t="1223.82">so</r>
<r t="1225.03">so</r>
<r t="1226.33">so i would say that you last i think a free open source software is</r>
<r t="1232.41">not as popular as it is in here</r>
<r t="1234.47">so you may be starting from scratch that we that we were or you may</r>
<r t="1238.84">have a all the next user group in your area you can get involved in</r>
<r t="1243.5">any sort of</r>
<r t="1244.84">actively talk about it will work</r>
<r t="1247.55">of course you know</r>
<r t="1250.71">so out there is a on linux user group then i would recommend that you</r>
<r t="1256.71">probably try to start with a broader focus if you have a really small</r>
<r t="1261.95">like we have website it you can go and set up pretty easily probably take</r>
<r t="1268.64">about twenty minutes to start it up</r>
<r t="1271.08">we use our mailing list a lot for a communicating with numbers for starting dates</r>
<r t="1278.28">of our meetings for asking members to get a</r>
<r t="1283.75">and the other thing is that you should convince your friends</r>
<r t="1287.45">well just</r>
<r t="1291.65">starting out especially we found that we had to give talks a lot</r>
<r t="1297.05">and it was pretty hard at first to get people in the in the group</r>
<r t="1302.22">to present</r>
<r t="1304.55">and so you</r>
<r t="1306.76">i would be willing to step up to back whenever there's an these five</r>
<r t="1311.34">and just share your knowledge and trying to form so that people are become you</r>
<r t="1318.13">know comfortable contributing what thing</r>
<r t="1322.94">so the other thing that we think</r>
<r t="1326.82">is that we see free software as something that people can use</r>
<r t="1335.08">to enhance their</r>
<r t="1337.19">if they can on learn they can use it so vertical they can read the</r>
<r t="1342.64">source code you can modify it on they can provide they can distract through using</r>
<r t="1350.37">and developing free software</r>
<r t="1354.05">well one thing that we do it's not is that oftentimes people why and write</r>
<r t="1358.52">your software</r>
<r t="1359.78">at work</r>
<r t="1361.64">first social media et cetera and so</r>
<r t="1365.52">we try to not be basic we try not to be judgement</r>
<r t="1370.56">we try to encourage people and keep it</r>
<r t="1377.65">and</r>
<r t="1378.92">that's our so</r>
<r t="1382.58">you are the links</r>
<r t="1385">and i give i talk really that's why</r>
<r t="1394.55">we have any spend</r>
<r t="1403.15">i but most what we use for which use should we have the existing more</r>
<r t="1411.66">so actually but what happened was that there had analogue in the chicago area that</r>
<r t="1417.49">had become that had that was no longer act</r>
<r t="1421.44">that started that i at which is that</r>
<r t="1423.95">school area and then it not and at the for a number of years and</r>
<r t="1428.72">so we started out just doing they can you know</r>
<r t="1432.41">and as we kind of found that was working as well we sort of resurrected</r>
<r t="1439.93">a lot and so we did end up having some people who had part of</r>
<r t="1445.46">a lot of what which was where i hope</r>
<r t="1450.31">but we did and that fill sort of resurrecting like the philly sound that in</r>
<r t="1456.59">building</r>
<r t="1458.49">so this point you to or we just to</r>
<r t="1464.52">we should what was no i would say i mean someone is i that hesitant</r>
<r t="1471.57">about giving this talk to the you know</r>
<r t="1473.91">because we started out really need don't focus and that was kind of my interesting</r>
<r t="1478.78">being involved but in the and what we what we are doing is we're doing</r>
<r t="1485.77">two hours of talks about three hours of have</r>
<r t="1489.18">and the hacking events</r>
<r t="1491.66">we have people work on you know and during the talks we do a lot</r>
<r t="1496.3">of you know related talks and it's know that the people organising are gonna</r>
<r t="1503.05">so i would say that in some ways</r>
<r t="1506.47">we are exactly part of the you know</r>
<r t="1509.72">we've sort of we've sort of had to broaden our for us because we have</r>
<r t="1513.54">such a small</r>
<r t="1517.66">well it's a will which will almost</r>
<r t="1523.58">so we use</r>
<r t="1529.77">you could use G really male</r>
<r t="1553.63">but</r>
<r t="1557.94">so what advice would you give to people were you know sort of you know</r>
<r t="1562.42">from your experience</r>
<r t="1563.85">starting out new groups and then you give a little bit of space already but</r>
<r t="1568.07">which you</r>
<r t="1569.55">would use you were to do it all over again which you start with how</r>
<r t="1572.62">to focus on them</r>
<r t="1576.02">i think</r>
<r t="1577.58">for me the focus it'll kind of the reason why got involved</r>
<r t="1581.83">and that's and something that spend really important to me and that i</r>
<r t="1585.79">try to</r>
<r t="1587.06">keep going</r>
<r t="1588.34">and so i don't</r>
<r t="1590.08">i don't think i will</r>
<r t="1592.26">lose the focus on you know i think that is something that i feel is</r>
<r t="1597.3">an important</r>
<r t="1598.62">where</r>
<r t="1599.48">but i do you think that</r>
<r t="1602.57">i mean it it's hard to get people involved in software</r>
<r t="1608.16">it's kind of at a help that a lot of ways we</r>
<r t="1611.77">and so</r>
<r t="1613.67">we sort of try to do whatever works</r>
<r t="1617.67">is all</r>
<r t="1619.01">making people interested and excited about</r>
<r t="1623.67">just the gina project and just saw for in general</r>
<r t="1628.67">so as a result of that i think you know i mean you know</r>
<r t="1634.2">if you look at</r>
<r t="1635.75">all of the projects that are</r>
<r t="1638.02">okay</r>
<r t="1639.5">you know and</r>
<r t="1641.16">these are</r>
<r t="1642.74">and do you buy these are things that people outside i can do you</r>
<r t="1647.45">and so explaining how we fit into the larger</r>
<r t="1652.19">free open source community has that really interesting thing i have sort of helps people</r>
<r t="1657.42">to sort of</r>
<r t="1658.57">what</r>
<r t="1659.82">just sort of what you know in a certain place and there</r>
<r t="1663.89">as a group that isn't just isolated</r>
<r t="1668.91">elements</r>
<r t="1671.45">making decisions kind of without listening to you</r>
<r t="1674.66">but so are a group that's providing</r>
<r t="1678.32">second used by</r>
<r t="1685.18">thank you for your told to i everything that you to say that there's been</r>
<r t="1690.33">some pictures used some possibilities for know quality about two works generally able to see</r>
<r t="1697.38">how do you do you do face a to discreetly seasonal and how would you</r>
<r t="1703.52">try to do these group of course try to do that to change the point</r>
<r t="1709.56">of view a the altar for you</r>
<r t="1713.68">so i think i think things that we did were first it's a</r>
<r t="1719.65">a three stopper in general are the other thing that we try to do is</r>
<r t="1724.48">to help people or how to use get a three and to talk about you</r>
<r t="1728.62">know three and what's happening in the ghetto project and what people are working on</r>
<r t="1733.92">and how the vision of the ball and sort of present what we want to</r>
<r t="1739.74">have happen in the future and you know how to get project use itself</r>
<r t="1745.47">and i think in a way that's sort of where we've seen a change</r>
<r t="1750.37">and how to is when people start to see that this is something that</r>
<r t="1754.89">we all people are working on</r>
<r t="1756.69">and that this is something that we are actively contributing to because we have a</r>
<r t="1760.94">passion for free software</r>
<r t="1763.57">a passion for development and then we seen people's attitude share and become more open</r>
<r t="1772.61">minded about saying well you know they'll tell us</r>
<r t="1775.98">this doesn't work for me but they don't see that as being something that will</r>
<r t="1779.91">not for me</r>
<r t="1781.88">it's you know something that</r>
<r t="1783.91">someone is form</r>
<r t="1785.82">i'm not you know maybe three months in the future will be different and there</r>
<r t="1790.32">will be improve</r>
<r t="1805.49">any other</r>
<r t="1810.03">thank you</r>
