<r t="10.4">this is a talk on extreme containment measures</r>
<r t="13.89">phone and language will be might be used for those who don't know me an</r>
<r t="18.5">example so i mean i don't know how like and i've been involved in one</r>
<r t="22.09">way or another since roughly two thousand and five</r>
<r t="25.26">and obviously with my first touch points for the gnome community have in panic no</r>
<r t="31.02">and buttons it up i spend a lot of time filing and three icing bugs</r>
<r t="39.31">and my character has level to well level reach the whole forty three in the</r>
<r t="44.26">massively multiplayer online knowing that is complex a lot so in this talk i'm going</r>
<r t="50.51">to present my analyses of the big issues that we face</r>
<r t="55.07">and proposed methodology and a set of recommendations to solve these issues</r>
<r t="62.32">i have some rather strong opinions and of course those are just my suggestions so</r>
<r t="68.44">if you think that what i'm saying is completely evil well then feel free to</r>
<r t="74.04">rage against my medical is an and i'd the talk is pretty going to be</r>
<r t="78.17">rather short so we should have plenty of time to discuss in the</r>
<r t="85.54">i would like to have a big debate at the end if i don't have</r>
<r t="88.8">some kind of reaction i probably failed and then we just have to go to</r>
<r t="93.72">the beach or something but well way there's no beach here</r>
<r t="97.23">so</r>
<r t="98.74">i have some assumptions that some of you might already have seen some of this</r>
<r t="104.85">stuff that i wrote set couple months ago</r>
<r t="109.16">but it's really if you want to know where mike kind of philosophy comes from</r>
<r t="114.08">a summary of mine ways of thinking i have been strongly influenced by the mythologies</r>
<r t="119.38">like getting things done or involve zero which is basically just getting things done but</r>
<r t="124.81">apply to an e-mail really so if you haven't read those things i highly recommend</r>
<r t="130.21">then in if you're the kind of person who likes to be organised</r>
<r t="137.12">and</r>
<r t="138.59">so</r>
<r t="139.9">all based on actually</r>
<r t="142.82">the sound doesn't work a</r>
<r t="146.3">so it doesn't matter anyway so those books are interesting and everything but if you</r>
<r t="150.4">really think about it</r>
<r t="152.18">the core essence has always been about what's been going on in the world of</r>
<r t="155.98">manufacturing for the last</r>
<r t="157.77">thirty years so</r>
<r t="160.05">lean and just in time manufacturing is it's a fascinating concept and</r>
<r t="166.11">well i was doing studies in management</r>
<r t="169.01">i started thinking about those things and how they applied pretty much everything we do</r>
<r t="175.23">in life</r>
<r t="176.33">from your personal to do this to managing a candy factory to managing a software</r>
<r t="182.77">development project</r>
<r t="184.08">so</r>
<r t="185.73">and when you think about it everything is about slow</r>
<r t="189.45">about good and adapting to change so you have something close in and you have</r>
<r t="195.38">stuff that those out and you want this to be constant and so it and</r>
<r t="200.27">and you want to avoid committing stuff because as soon as you have to make</r>
<r t="203.74">stuff well things will below i can guarantee and</r>
<r t="208.74">and there's this interesting thing from one of the books i've mentioned previously is the</r>
<r t="214.01">only keeping that you should be retained from in the gold writes a book</r>
<r t="218.9">in the context of but management is this</r>
<r t="222.15">excess invent three is the liability it's not an asset</r>
<r t="226.59">and</r>
<r t="227.61">in that in the manufacturing world actually that means the stuff that you have produced</r>
<r t="232.62">and now you think well okay wait that's just wrong the product is work something</r>
<r t="238.55">right we're gonna sell it and then so it's and it's not set</r>
<r t="241.93">it's natural to think that way</r>
<r t="245.27">except that you don't know the market constraints until useful that you're not selling it</r>
<r t="250.34">me immediately if you were you wouldn't be in the inventor E you will you</r>
<r t="255.08">would you would just be selling it and making a profit</r>
<r t="258.83">and so what this means is that is stuff that just sits around until it</r>
<r t="264.51">might be sold</r>
<r t="266.48">and then it devalues it waste this resources and it clogs up the system</r>
<r t="272.49">so</r>
<r t="273.67">in our context</r>
<r t="275.81">that means connective wait</r>
<r t="278.84">and</r>
<r t="279.99">that's a concept that i took from getting things know that don</r>
<r t="284.43">and</r>
<r t="287.08">you think things know miss we can also that by the weights</r>
<r t="291.2">so it's is it translates to wasted time searching for existing but reports split attention</r>
<r t="298.01">on duplicates wasted energy looking for well it's good same bugs that were kept open</r>
<r t="305">or because we were close to soon and</r>
<r t="309.22">it all it's also feels like an incorrect indication of the quality of your software</r>
<r t="315.1">and</r>
<r t="316.72">we have a problem here</r>
<r t="319.28">we are accumulating excess eventually</r>
<r t="322.64">lots of it</r>
<r t="323.91">and fast</r>
<r t="325">and it's slowing us down</r>
<r t="327.2">of course pretty much every project out there has this problem</r>
<r t="331.67">and you to the fact that you know is such a large ecosystem</r>
<r t="336.44">of this can ecosystem projects that have been going on for over fifteen years</r>
<r t="342.16">well we and we don't have unlimited the mat time and manpower</r>
<r t="348.77">the consequences is just going exponential</r>
<r t="352.21">so allow non you're thinking well okay maybe is just exaggerating</r>
<r t="356.94">so let me show you the problem we have in a very concrete way</r>
<r t="362.2">this is the global amount of open but report thinking on since the beginning</r>
<r t="367.66">i'm actually and missing data between two thousand and one or two thousand and five</r>
<r t="371.71">but i'm pretty sure the amount of focus has not drastically going down during that</r>
<r t="376.21">period so i just put some random guy on a bike right</r>
<r t="380.11">feel the whole</r>
<r t="382.42">so that's</r>
<r t="383.4">forty five thousand bug reports that we have open right now and i'd argue that</r>
<r t="390">this is not sustainable this stuff is often times so old and they see that</r>
<r t="396.03">doesn't even represent to real amount bugs that users experience</r>
<r t="401.57">so let me this is with it this way i don't know the but you</r>
<r t="404.79">but</r>
<r t="405.76">i as a user</r>
<r t="408.44">if i was feeling the weight of forty five thousand bucks</r>
<r t="413.1">every day</r>
<r t="414.66">i wouldn't be using the computer that's all i would probably be crying in a</r>
<r t="418.95">corner</r>
<r t="420.32">and</r>
<r t="421.6">so</r>
<r t="423.5">well who's responsible for this would we point fingers to well pretty much everybody to</r>
<r t="428.6">some extent</r>
<r t="429.8">it's really easy to let things</r>
<r t="432.61">slipped and rest of the time</r>
<r t="435.35">and so i'm going to show you some examples and those are not meant to</r>
<r t="440.44">be</r>
<r t="441.57">finger pointing or anything like that they are just meant to in the illustrates how</r>
<r t="445.87">different projects</r>
<r t="447.19">and all their bug infantry differently</r>
<r t="449.83">and well i think it's quite interesting really</r>
<r t="455.13">so</r>
<r t="457.35">first case it is really</r>
<r t="460.77">it was fairly nice the under control is a can see and then the port</r>
<r t="464.98">to webcat happened</r>
<r t="468.29">and many things changed including the apps branding and positioning</r>
<r t="473.8">because now epiphany is</r>
<r t="476.51">this really mean stripped down a way more than it was before so that's</r>
<r t="483.29">a different positioning you don't have the same kind of features that want to deal</r>
<r t="488.23">with</r>
<r t="489.8">and well we can infer that the green bugs were filed by the developers right</r>
<r t="495.27">from the start because they were</r>
<r t="497.75">that is new which means conferencing you know</r>
<r t="500.81">and we see that we got the that green curve gradually declining in importance in</r>
<r t="506.79">the past few years</r>
<r t="508.59">but not that much</r>
<r t="510.25">so well gradually declining</r>
<r t="513.03">in absolute terms so some of those very old bugs that these files from the</r>
<r t="517.26">beginning</r>
<r t="518.46">some of them have been fixed in that's a great thing but there's this really</r>
<r t="522.92">big red line that's goes that's going on and i think that in the case</r>
<r t="529.24">of epiphany we have this huge cleanup opportunity</r>
<r t="533.12">because support of web to work it</r>
<r t="535.54">changes everything changes everything the backend so all those bugs were reported back when epiphany</r>
<r t="541.35">was running on a call the well the last firefox that something engine they are</r>
<r t="548.24">they need to be retested or</r>
<r t="550.76">in many cases than we know that they are fixed we so you have this</r>
<r t="554.92">cleanup opportunity and there is also the fact that the you why is so much</r>
<r t="559.25">simpler and does not want to do everything that the old you white one did</r>
<r t="564.66">that's also another clean up opportunity</r>
<r t="568.03">so that was the case that you have epiphany</r>
<r t="571.64">and well and that is just a generic example is fairly under control that bill</r>
<r t="577.94">died but the end that was me because i started thinking up some stuff but</r>
<r t="583.03">then</r>
<r t="584.59">life happens and i didn't continue that much</r>
<r t="588.78">so it looks like a typical glow module</r>
<r t="592.3">and</r>
<r t="593.82">evolution is a special case</r>
<r t="596.69">notice that actually use the new status</r>
<r t="599.96">and that there was this amazing improvement somewhere in the</r>
<r t="605.54">somewhere in guess advocate and if i'm not mistaken a big part of that is</r>
<r t="610.75">thanks to on the clapper is he here</r>
<r t="613.63">yes</r>
<r t="614.68">is that true</r>
<r t="618.83">well thank you all day</r>
<r t="621.19">i you that you that one</r>
<r t="623.98">and</r>
<r t="625.55">so but there's still this</r>
<r t="628.12">huge amount of bug reports left to deal with so</r>
<r t="632.01">that defined ahead all day and</r>
<r t="636.31">no show</r>
<r t="638.24">away</r>
<r t="640.19">i have many things to say about the way the project handle it's bug reports</r>
<r t="645.1">but i fear might hurt some feelings so maybe i'll keep that for discussions in</r>
<r t="650.16">the hallways or maybe at the ways question period at the end so</r>
<r t="655.91">but anyway it's gonna it's gonna just flow naturally with the</r>
<r t="660.39">the techniques i'm suggesting in the rest of the stock and</r>
<r t="665.83">G T K it needs help</r>
<r t="669.23">it has a lot of old bugs so you as you can see so over</r>
<r t="673.48">two thousand to a two thousand five hundred</r>
<r t="676.75">no actually you have to you have to add up the lines actually it's not</r>
<r t="681.56">there are cumulative</r>
<r t="684.92">so it has a lot a lot a lot of old bugs that are certainly</r>
<r t="688.51">not relevant anymore</r>
<r t="690.76">it basically needs an army of testers</r>
<r t="694.09">and i from a net contributor once said to me</r>
<r t="699.03">i am not subscribe to did you to give about males</r>
<r t="701.87">i don't look at the bug tracker</r>
<r t="704.29">when it comes to fix in biology books in G T K</r>
<r t="707.97">whoever catches me first on our C in the morning wins</r>
<r t="712.81">we have a problem</r>
<r t="715.08">so</r>
<r t="717.2">and of our case to illustrate is a bit to be which is also another</r>
<r t="721.27">special based</r>
<r t="724.24">i'm arrogant enough to think that this is kind of how things should be at</r>
<r t="728.24">least</r>
<r t="729.18">i like at least like this or better and this</r>
<r t="732.27">the new bugs are more numerous than the unconfirmed bugs</r>
<r t="738.55">and they are kind of kept on the control so i the thing that i</r>
<r t="743.92">actually haven't mentioned is that all those graphs they are not on the same scale</r>
<r t="747.84">the are all related to their own</r>
<r t="750.7">their own total so evolution you went from like five thousand to three thousand to</r>
<r t="756.76">a little bit nicer i think it's about the thousand now and you take a</r>
<r t="760.19">as you could see was the at two thousand five hundred B T V the</r>
<r t="764.49">scale here is a hundred and fifty the upper bounds so if you add things</r>
<r t="771.08">up it's about two hundred two hundred and forty fifty bucks half of that is</r>
<r t="775.2">the feature requests</r>
<r t="777.57">feature requests and</r>
<r t="780.35">and this graph is going to eventually come crashing down in the next be to</r>
<r t="785.34">be really switch it will happen any day now as i close a bunch of</r>
<r t="790.56">those old bug reports</r>
<r t="793.34">and i ching this advertising you might be interested in attending maybe to talk tomorrow</r>
<r t="798.66">at the end of the for details</r>
<r t="801.9">britain box is another it well it's in a similar situation to G T K</r>
<r t="806.81">it needs help</r>
<r t="808.76">it has at on of potential duplicates and in change book reports</r>
<r t="816.81">i certainly don't feel like i'm encountering a thousand bug it i thousand four hundred</r>
<r t="823.22">bucks when i'm listening to my music library</r>
<r t="826.09">so i don't think there are that many buttons thing with some box it is</r>
<r t="832.36">nobody closest box i think</r>
<r t="835.83">so well let's talk about quality and let me shut up or while and think</r>
<r t="840.53">of a bit a while what is quality this is an open question for you</r>
<r t="845.45">folks to answer</r>
<r t="848.14">how should we can own define how we measure quality</r>
<r t="854.9">anyone</r>
<r t="860.25">really</r>
<r t="863.12">it's all about the users in the</r>
<r t="869.15">the company incoming number of bug reports</r>
<r t="879.64">i wonder</r>
<r t="882.05">any other ideas</r>
<r t="887.58">static and the statistical analysis</r>
<r t="900.28">well it doesn't crash</r>
<r t="902.3">the you know of an application that doesn't crash ever</r>
<r t="907.15">it works once should it should it</r>
<r t="912.47">well how do we know that we're</r>
<r t="915.27">that we're better off as a whole</r>
<r t="917.94">compared to two thousand five</r>
<r t="923.55">in any case</r>
<r t="926.4">we can probably agree that the amount of bug reports we hadn't noble to that</r>
<r t="930.13">is not a strong indication of the quality of our software</r>
<r t="937.27">and this is a partial quote from joe was able ski</r>
<r t="941.95">at some point you start wondering what is people love my software</r>
<r t="947.59">one hell have so many but reports</r>
<r t="950.59">open then there waiting increase crashing down my soul</r>
<r t="955.76">it in this article so argues that</r>
<r t="959.89">force the actually advocate for something pretty rack radical he says</r>
<r t="964.04">do not allow for more than two weeks in fixing time</r>
<r t="968.58">of bugs to accumulate in the bug database</r>
<r t="972.97">so if you have more than that you stop and you fix books until you</r>
<r t="976.82">feel like you're fixing stupid bugs</r>
<r t="979.29">and then you close all the remaining but reports</r>
<r t="982.67">and he says don't worry december break this either bogs will come back</r>
<r t="987.98">okay that's a crazy radical thing to do</r>
<r t="991.89">that's not what applying to our if those as an as open source developers typically</r>
<r t="997.28">especially if we're talking about volunteer work</r>
<r t="1000.58">where we don't necessarily have that seeing the regularity the manpower to fix bugs at</r>
<r t="1005.95">the steady pace</r>
<r t="1009.02">so how do we do it</r>
<r t="1011.64">you're thinking maybe well okay that's easy if you're only dealing with feature requests</r>
<r t="1017.51">or about then</r>
<r t="1020.43">what do you do with longstanding bugs</r>
<r t="1022.88">or what do you we do with the pickets</r>
<r t="1027.41">well we need to get serious about control</r>
<r t="1033.45">and by see resign mean many things</r>
<r t="1035.8">the right from the cards and philosophy in the manufacturing will</r>
<r t="1041.16">and cards and is basically this is also called five S system sadie sate on</r>
<r t="1047.19">say suppose and stick it so then it's okay it's translating to send it sizing</r>
<r t="1052.85">which is get rid of stuff</r>
<r t="1055.08">organising cleaning maintaining the D V cleaning less and disciplined enough to catering this methodology</r>
<r t="1066.22">we have forty five thousand bugs we need to start cleaning now and we need</r>
<r t="1070.21">just keep cleaning as we go in the future</r>
<r t="1074.88">so now we can apply some other things like inbox zero</r>
<r t="1078.71">and box there was basically just a mindset we say what is this mindset we're</r>
<r t="1083.14">dealing with email but we can apply to but management to some extent when you</r>
<r t="1087.7">receive an email you can either delete it you can transfer</r>
<r t="1091.87">to somebody else you can respond immediately</r>
<r t="1095.43">or you can market to be processed later because you're waiting on something else to</r>
<r t="1099.61">happen in the universe</r>
<r t="1101.24">or you do the action that you email sender requests</r>
<r t="1105.1">and we can apply that</r>
<r t="1106.81">to are but</r>
<r t="1109.02">mythology</r>
<r t="1110.87">and basically decision-making boils down to three possibilities</r>
<r t="1117.16">it's and you could see that</r>
<r t="1120.87">need info is not</r>
<r t="1123.56">actually this that there but it's really important</r>
<r t="1128.39">you have to use meeting full aggressively</r>
<r t="1132.31">you helps you identify obsolete bugs by simply running a search for bugs that have</r>
<r t="1137.09">been in them in the info state for</r>
<r t="1139.75">over two months or something</r>
<r t="1142.33">and confirming bugs is actually important</r>
<r t="1146.1">very few projects just actually confirmed the box</r>
<r t="1150.25">one thing i would strongly at of okay for tech actually is that we replace</r>
<r t="1154.91">the new statist by conference in can on box it up even though many people</r>
<r t="1160.21">will probably throw rotten fruit and me for saying that because i don't know many</r>
<r t="1164.08">people don't believe in confirmation about this</r>
<r t="1166.43">but</r>
<r t="1168.16">i think it could make an</r>
<r t="1170.05">add difference psychologically speaking</r>
<r t="1174.2">because</r>
<r t="1176.03">indecision is power lights is</r>
<r t="1179.16">if you leave at seven years old bug report open because it's in unconfirmed states</r>
<r t="1184.16">and because nobody has made a decision</r>
<r t="1187.98">it's not gonna help to attain a learning process</r>
<r t="1191.99">so whatever possible we want to clear yes or no if we don't decide now</r>
<r t="1197.75">we probably never will there's a question over there</r>
<r t="1201.91">we have a microphone</r>
<r t="1205.48">you can shop and</r>
<r t="1208.48">and are given the microphone or i will read tweed the question</r>
<r t="1214.16">hi i'm i guess possibly five maybe ten percent of the box it might box</r>
<r t="1220.52">of the overflow folder where i've set they lock and so this picture and i</r>
<r t="1225.99">say sorry ask a not about</r>
<r t="1228.65">and they rip in the back</r>
<r t="1230.59">and i say still i think still not still not gonna happen close the book</r>
<r t="1234.72">that in the park and i just pick of well</r>
<r t="1237.74">magically we box with the</r>
<r t="1239.4">the report just keeps reopening them</r>
<r t="1246.06">i think that so that's it comes that a little bit later</r>
<r t="1249.49">actually that's with the previous like to some extent</r>
<r t="1255.62">if it's a bug well okay a bogus should be fixed</r>
<r t="1259.53">but if it's a feature requests</r>
<r t="1261.72">well there are three types</r>
<r t="1264.07">either you agree with the thing is a absolutely i wanna do it so</r>
<r t="1268.37">yes confirmed and everything if you are confident that you can actually fix it</r>
<r t="1273.84">either your like not this really doesn't fit the vision so no out of scope</r>
<r t="1279.21">sorry</r>
<r t="1280.67">and there's a middle ground where side while i could like this feature but i</r>
<r t="1285.32">don't really care that much and i don't have them apart is that your case</r>
<r t="1291.63">we should be constant</r>
<r t="1294">so in the case where they suggest something this we could have anything that we</r>
<r t="1297.44">could have</r>
<r t="1299.08">and you say catches welcome and then nothing happens just close it</r>
<r t="1306.31">so what i would do</r>
<r t="1308.59">is</r>
<r t="1309.49">i would markets as enhancements</r>
<r t="1312.19">with and i would highly it with the goal of help want to do and</r>
<r t="1315.95">everything should but then is so it's not gonna as an enhancement it's not about</r>
<r t="1319.57">report and at some points</r>
<r t="1322.87">after three years you can't we all the patch</r>
<r t="1325.95">or after</r>
<r t="1327.47">i'm saying three years but maybe after one year or two years</r>
<r t="1331.93">if there is no clear indication if it's like one guy in the in some</r>
<r t="1337.31">faraway country we carry can strays it down so instead of</r>
<r t="1342.97">twenty people saying plus one plus one plus one and then you could say well</r>
<r t="1348.8">these your open this bug report this enhancement request when you have a patch because</r>
<r t="1352.72">i cut but then comes in the can replies which i will cover that there</r>
<r t="1357.94">there is out in with a question</r>
<r t="1368.98">but i know it's difficult</r>
<r t="1371.18">to come back to the question we do it in the form a we had</r>
<r t="1375.55">a czech cult your job</r>
<r t="1378.16">a dish in addition to the enhancement and we provides help to get it it's</r>
<r t="1384">a great it's like you know which files to you have to add it's by</r>
<r t="1387.04">do you have to start</r>
<r t="1391.6">then the other thing to remember is that</r>
<r t="1394.9">it's probably not useful to have</r>
<r t="1397.19">five hundred</r>
<r t="1398.86">yes would like this but we're not gonna work on that box because it's not</r>
<r t="1402.76">helpful from you contribute is either like is much better to have</r>
<r t="1406.93">these of the top twenty things we want you to do if you wanna contribute</r>
<r t="1411.02">and just maintain that list and you know we will still be in the database</r>
<r t="1415.46">even if you close then you can still kind of search for close but i</r>
<r t="1419.93">with no love the something the not gone forever</r>
<r t="1422.99">so you can you can manage a list that one</r>
<r t="1426.43">you could indeed have some kind of special search for</r>
<r t="1429.68">bugs that well feature requests</r>
<r t="1432.36">that times out because nobody has a bad</r>
<r t="1435.37">it could be done</r>
<r t="1438.76">the questions</r>
<r t="1441.55">i sell continue glorious past</r>
<r t="1448.6">so here yes i don't know whenever possible when you it's not possible</r>
<r t="1454.03">use this wonderful thing called time to figure out if there is actually real interest</r>
<r t="1460.25">that can help you</r>
<r t="1463.93">i mean part of the open source thing is that we want people to be</r>
<r t="1469.17">annoyed enough to contribute to our project</r>
<r t="1472.92">so if after three years nobody there is to make a patch for it</r>
<r t="1478.4">maybe it's not important enough</r>
<r t="1480.98">maybe it's not annoying enough</r>
<r t="1486.56">you either oppose it can from and something else</r>
<r t="1490.82">and using target milestones is actually pretty important and useful to and it allows you</r>
<r t="1497.6">to know</r>
<r t="1498.97">but maybe that's just a personal thing i do with the P T V about</r>
<r t="1503.39">it allows you to know which bugs were fixed for web version exactly</r>
<r t="1508.13">and it also helps a lot when you're releasing</r>
<r t="1512.11">because you just have to search for results bugs that were</r>
<r t="1515.7">attached to a given milestone and then you write the release notes or just point</r>
<r t="1520.13">to the link saying that was where the bugs that were fixed drink for this</r>
<r t="1523.62">release even if this book was ten years old it was finally fixed for this</r>
<r t="1527.92">release and you can see all that kind of information directly in the bug tracker</r>
<r t="1535.01">so when i was saying about yes-no fix it immediately are deferred or say just</r>
<r t="1540.07">know</r>
<r t="1541.13">when i say fix it into the i do mean fix it and then controls</r>
<r t="1545.74">the bug report</r>
<r t="1547.37">unless the feature is still broken and i mean really broken let me illustrate this</r>
<r t="1552.01">but i need sound for this to work and i'm not sure i do have</r>
<r t="1555.44">sounds</r>
<r t="1562.91">or is there anything that controls the somewhere here</r>
<r t="1571.16">not normally</r>
<r t="1575.2">well one what lot of speakers all i could like what microphone</r>
<r t="1580.96">that's gonna be also</r>
<r t="1609.33">that was a former so you're that</r>
<r t="1613.44">alright</r>
<r t="1614.52">ghetto blaster microphone like so</r>
<r t="1618.62">what do i mean by this</r>
<r t="1621.56">you've got a fixed for about that you have committed to your master brian what</r>
<r t="1625.55">you are a little bit unsatisfied with the cost quality</r>
<r t="1630.55">then you add some comments in your code and a to do item on your</r>
<r t="1634.62">personal this but do not keep your bug report open insisting because when you'd like</r>
<r t="1639.32">to come is a better implementation</r>
<r t="1642.76">you don't show some</r>
<r t="1645.32">by the way to not close bugs until the fix has been marriage</r>
<r t="1650.5">the main development branch</r>
<r t="1652.65">is the fix is only committed to a separate branch well you can market as</r>
<r t="1657.17">assigned another underused but reports that is</r>
<r t="1661.31">and then</r>
<r t="1663.59">you can market is assigned until it goes into monster and of course you said</r>
<r t="1667.32">yes find email because that's pretty</r>
<r t="1671.1">so</r>
<r t="1674.28">no is actually pretty famous for daring to say no out of scope</r>
<r t="1679.82">but saying you know without ending up on the front page of slashdot is actually</r>
<r t="1684.11">a very delicate art</r>
<r t="1686.67">you can't implement everything out there due to insufficient manpower or because feature X would</r>
<r t="1692.19">go against projects vision or intended user experience</r>
<r t="1696.88">and for that i can't miss i age helps a lot</r>
<r t="1701.61">people we with will respect your decision more if we know your constraints and why</r>
<r t="1706.77">you have to say no</r>
<r t="1709.94">so by can message</r>
<r t="1712.4">well</r>
<r t="1714.57">i kind of message is the message that you composed for something that's basically as</r>
<r t="1719.33">if you for book reports</r>
<r t="1721.41">if there is non available you create one and you save it as a text</r>
<r t="1725.32">file on your computer for reuse that way you don't end up</r>
<r t="1729.77">like</r>
<r t="1731.31">being super frustrated of always having to type the same explanation to why this cannot</r>
<r t="1737.41">be done or why this will not be done</r>
<r t="1740.46">and you don't and i'm just saying nope and ending up on news sites</r>
<r t="1746.44">for example you could have something that was like this</r>
<r t="1749.42">hi and thanks for reporting this bug</r>
<r t="1752.03">P T V score is currently being replaced by the distributing services which is a</r>
<r t="1757.05">major undertaking an overhaul and we suddenly can't investigate much bucks the talk sure on</r>
<r t="1762.5">the traditional core of it see</r>
<r t="1765.15">we will revisit this</r>
<r t="1767.35">a by the next please which will use gas and hopefully your issue may be</r>
<r t="1771.43">gone by that new release</r>
<r t="1773.69">otherwise we will appreciate your help in testing it out thanks</r>
<r t="1778.05">so that's the kind of thing i don't want to read be typing on the</r>
<r t="1781.62">spot ever again</r>
<r t="1783.62">so i keep it as a text file on my computer</r>
<r t="1787.65">so you should</r>
<r t="1791.58">you should</r>
<r t="1792.87">there we do have ten for advising them back to that but they don't</r>
<r t="1797.37">necessarily corner the specifics or of your project so it's nice to have those custom</r>
<r t="1802.07">kind replies on your computer</r>
<r t="1804.16">for example for the meeting full stuff with custom debugging instructions for your project</r>
<r t="1813.03">and</r>
<r t="1814.46">searching is every nice thing is you can see the bottom of the screen i</r>
<r t="1817.61">have a lot of special saved searches so that's</r>
<r t="1822.28">that seems a bit silly but it's really useful in taking away the pain of</r>
<r t="1829.06">money string the bugs and the patterns and the stuff that for example i want</r>
<r t="1833.78">to see all the bugs that are older than four hundred days and that have</r>
<r t="1836.62">dot have any patch</r>
<r t="1839.21">that's use of useful for finding that</r>
<r t="1843.82">and not just a little edits hyperlink in the book title</r>
<r t="1848.87">like and it's</r>
<r t="1850.54">super hard to spot actually</r>
<r t="1853.51">not many people know it actually exists</r>
<r t="1857.79">you can use that to rename the bug report as the same time as you</r>
<r t="1861.07">are commenting other changes</r>
<r t="1863.57">and then you can use a book good bug title slash summary</r>
<r t="1867.11">so you can make a complete sentence with exact words</r>
<r t="1871.27">and choosing the right words improve fired see it makes to bug user to find</r>
<r t="1877.72">prevents duplicates</r>
<r t="1879.52">makes coffee so it's</r>
<r t="1884.03">actually i go</r>
<r t="1885.86">i go a little bit tougher and that i use synonyms like and i think</r>
<r t="1890.38">of all maybe someone is gonna think of that for when searching so i use</r>
<r t="1895.11">multiple words that mean the same thing in that title</r>
<r t="1899.24">for example some example of good and back well good and bad</r>
<r t="1903.97">but titles</r>
<r t="1906.12">all the first one is not that compelling well old one was share my the</r>
<r t="1909.47">stuff the item in the menu lot of life you know is a registered hundred</r>
<r t="1912.52">immensely five</r>
<r t="1914">i nine we need to do all initially share make this a menu item if</r>
<r t="1917.14">you know is a well</r>
<r t="1920.52">the second one is more interesting it's a bug in them to this U which</r>
<r t="1924.68">was titled show where files come from no or maybe it was just what i</r>
<r t="1929.89">thought at first and then i thought well i'm i need a better it but</r>
<r t="1933.41">title instead provide context allow users to know the path slash location from where files</r>
<r t="1938.95">and folders and search results come from so that way if someone searches for past</r>
<r t="1944.1">or location or search or results</r>
<r t="1947.93">or context you they're gonna find that a real easily</r>
<r t="1953.21">and some other examples</r>
<r t="1955.75">for example the first example</r>
<r t="1959.46">people searching for words such as sound or ring tone or call will find that</r>
<r t="1965.3">about report easily</r>
<r t="1968.77">the</r>
<r t="1970.38">the one near the middle if you search for G E mail i not message</r>
<r t="1976.89">account you're gonna find this but before</r>
<r t="1981.84">so keywords a really nice</r>
<r t="1985.49">i use gnome love all the time i don't know might is normal of all</r>
<r t="1989.4">the time is make is</r>
<r t="1991.38">is really easy to just type every bugs that are kind of easy</r>
<r t="1997.72">that you don't really have time or motivation to tackle or that you actually you</r>
<r t="2002.52">could do it in two minutes maybe for feature request</r>
<r t="2006.57">but you have more urgent things to do and you kind of want to use</r>
<r t="2010.48">them to lure people into contributing your project</r>
<r t="2013.71">so i do that's</r>
<r t="2017.98">i'm not sure about help want to but i think it's just for stuff that</r>
<r t="2021.91">you are yourself</r>
<r t="2023.94">unable to tackle</r>
<r t="2026.42">and the distinction between usability and you want reviews of that youtube it send clear</r>
<r t="2032.08">but so i think the you wire if you is when you want to call</r>
<r t="2034.83">out and they to the rescue</r>
<r t="2036.93">and there's a bunch of other keywords that are less use</r>
<r t="2043.29">so divide and conquer</r>
<r t="2047.15">don't do it on if possible do it in teamwork maybe would but T I's</r>
<r t="2051.87">days</r>
<r t="2052.94">maybe to google hangouts</r>
<r t="2055.61">or but fests i don't know if that just actually something a word</r>
<r t="2062.5">there is also a to fill it moves are made the script</r>
<r t="2066.94">once some time and to force him to revisit ten bucks a day</r>
<r t="2072.19">i think this is five bucks a day but if you read the code this</r>
<r t="2075.37">is actually it's ten bucks today</r>
<r t="2079.09">so you can grab descriptive your if you need extra something in your face</r>
<r t="2086.33">and well to recap basically you want to need info everything your hands for unsure</r>
<r t="2092.41">about in six months with that special search query you close any remaining needed for</r>
<r t="2098.39">that has not been clearly answered</r>
<r t="2100.74">if the norm box quite doesn't do it for you for free</r>
<r t="2107.08">if you are a developer who knows the project vision</r>
<r t="2111.93">well you have to show some courage and say no or patch or it won't</r>
<r t="2117.94">happen</r>
<r t="2119.51">and if you're not a developer or if you like experience but have jobs</r>
<r t="2124.64">most project of appears would be very happy to have any kind of help interesting</r>
<r t="2130.77">the bug so</r>
<r t="2132.16">you can ask for yes slash no decision on any given bug</r>
<r t="2138.2">and then that way you getting some experience in know what's the vision what and</r>
<r t="2143.45">whatnot</r>
<r t="2146.19">so you also have to do render regular cleanup sessions every few months</r>
<r t="2151.11">or when there is a major technologist goal or</r>
<r t="2156.1">idealistic all change going on</r>
<r t="2160.17">so that means that you have to know the know the big projects on your</r>
<r t="2163.58">road map and</r>
<r t="2166.06">see that fortunate is popping up such as hold on touch bugs</r>
<r t="2170.34">core engine changes like P T Vs switch to T S or if you can</r>
<r t="2174.17">use which to web get</r>
<r t="2176.55">and or big you why redesigns</r>
<r t="2180.11">stuff like that</r>
<r t="2182.2">and you can run search queries to search and verify all the bugs that are</r>
<r t="2187.26">older and four hundred days eight hundred days</r>
<r t="2190.78">chances are that they are fixed already they are obsolete</r>
<r t="2195.27">let's go duplicates</r>
<r t="2197.69">or just plain crack</r>
<r t="2199.65">and i mean like wracked is probably like requesting features from the eighties that zero</r>
<r t="2204.99">point one percent of users actually care about</r>
<r t="2210.55">that's it it's nothing revolutionary it's just i hope that's somewhat useful now you can</r>
<r t="2216.74">probably questions comments and insults</r>
<r t="2219.36">and i'm pretty sure i must have overlooked or focus in something</r>
<r t="2224.09">and that's have a chance</r>
<r t="2239.33">but</r>
<r t="2240.37">i also you have very nice lines</r>
<r t="2244.05">and you sounds to do you made an example that people don't even know that</r>
<r t="2250.12">you can change the talking book so but i don't think that's the only problem</r>
<r t="2255.8">not the only a interface problem of books of the i think so it's a</r>
<r t="2261.63">all those stuff would improve the blue</r>
<r t="2265.01">then would it looks a little buttons took something move gonna</r>
<r t="2270.04">thing is that you would have to find the bug tracker that is much better</r>
<r t="2274.24">that numbers about any is if we an open source project actually free an open</r>
<r t="2278.88">source project and can handle huge buffaloes</r>
<r t="2282.95">and or the sysadmins are gonna hate us and</r>
<r t="2289.82">i mean these days many people many projects smaller projects the just to the but</r>
<r t="2296.08">that issues management on get hub or stuff like that but that's proprietary i don't</r>
<r t="2300.73">i don't think it's open source at all and some do it on know nobody</r>
<r t="2305.98">uses source forge are anymore it's so crap and</r>
<r t="2311.46">the thing</r>
<r t="2314.13">i few years ago i have was actually looking for a bug tracker that would</r>
<r t="2318.53">be at least equal in quality and versatility to bugs it out and that could</r>
<r t="2323.44">actually installed without that phd on and my home server and i didn't find anything</r>
<r t="2329.87">and actually a book sellers was it a bit too complex for me to install</r>
<r t="2334.46">but i didn't find anything</r>
<r t="2337.86">that i like really much more than books</r>
<r t="2342.07">like there's bookseller lunch but this is it's okay but many people created and there's</r>
<r t="2346.54">google codes</r>
<r t="2347.99">which is not open source i don't</r>
<r t="2351.17">we don't really have i don't know if we have an of the native out</r>
<r t="2356.48">there</r>
<r t="2357.94">if so</r>
<r t="2359.13">why not consider it</r>
<r t="2362.78">out of time</r>
<r t="2369.36">anyway if anybody else has questions or fruit rotten fruit to throw i will be</r>
<r t="2374.09">in the hallway</r>
<r t="2376.22">that's it</r>
</data>
