<r t="9.65">okay first of this talk was titled with you know being so well positioned and</r>
<r t="14.66">then i was gonna lead into the things that can on has done over the</r>
<r t="17.78">years to get themselves into the ideal position right now but then after meeting with</r>
<r t="23.28">people on the first day the conference</r>
<r t="25.49">i realised that it would be more aptly titled do good known know that there's</r>
<r t="30.54">a well position and did you plan it this way</r>
<r t="33.88">and there is so much i</r>
<r t="39.85">so much background to this that i'm going to try to speak slowly so you</r>
<r t="44.12">understand but quickly with the content</r>
<r t="48.33">this could feel they could go and so the things i'd like to cover is</r>
<r t="52.42">who's behind gonna linux hardware why this hardware matter it looks like the screen sizes</r>
<r t="57.58">of</r>
<r t="58.6">and most important</r>
<r t="61.17">how to make got can globally well now before</r>
<r t="66.83">i start i need to give you a disclaimer globally loved first</r>
<r t="71.23">so you see this guy putting a little no but in his pocket this was</r>
<r t="76.7">the first know book that we got to build at all we have level ourselves</r>
<r t="81.16">in china</r>
<r t="82.21">and it was so find you wonder you know do people like the laptops or</r>
<r t="86.32">building or they appealing because we want to have that</r>
<r t="89.97">that feeling where you love your laptops laptop becomes very much for your life</r>
<r t="95.68">and this is the first conference we brought that at the this was the tail</r>
<r t="99.06">pro et one</r>
<r t="100.6">and a guy tried to take it</r>
<r t="102.91">if not gonna there's pockets like a</r>
<r t="105.5">some like that was that was that's the sign of being well loved if somebody</r>
<r t="109.73">actively tries to grab it</r>
<r t="113.28">were aiming for sleek beautiful high and</r>
<r t="117.31">and that's what we hope you know is aiming for also actually your you have</r>
<r t="121.76">so</r>
<r t="123.02">i need to give you disclaimer as a hardware manufacturer generally we don't read the</r>
<r t="127.16">news we're not aware of the</r>
<r t="130.47">drama</r>
<r t="131.64">the things that go on the things that are said feeling sort of are all</r>
<r t="135.02">that the reason why is back in two thousand six two thousand seven we started</r>
<r t="139.77">i realised that i had two choices i can follow the news</r>
<r t="145.22">deal with the issues or i can build hardware</r>
<r t="149.17">and i decided to build hardware "'cause" it's pretty and it's fun</r>
<r t="152.64">so sometimes people have a hard time understanding wait a minute this blond chick from</r>
<r t="158.02">california couldn't possibly build computers or be behind the company that builds computers yes this</r>
<r t="164.67">is what we build</r>
<r t="166.24">these things hardware</r>
<r t="168.88">although we were close hardware and software this is our company we built a little</r>
<r t="174.96">shop in berkeley california we decided to settle in berkeley because is the only city</r>
<r t="179.46">specifically identified with the distraught</r>
<r t="183.93">we have in to build to be small light and we the goal is not</r>
<r t="188.74">to build a large campus i grew up near microsoft ice other campus to go</r>
<r t="192.96">over the landscape we live near tell again to cover landscape we wanna small light</r>
<r t="198.23">we and local because that's how for you know in this bill it's but one</r>
<r t="201.06">person time</r>
<r t="202.83">we will have messing with the hardware we do work on all levels well i</r>
<r t="207.11">say we're a harbour builder we also do have to mess with the software but</r>
<r t="210.81">although we do not make any changes we make we send upstream we do not</r>
<r t="215.85">keep any proprietary code and house</r>
<r t="219.26">we have a lot of fun building what we build and rebuild it specifically</r>
<r t="224.1">for work just like you do to scratch an itch</r>
<r t="228.31">although when i got to me with karen</r>
<r t="231.42">and one of my first questions was well want my second question was</r>
<r t="235.32">why do you do what you do there's got to be a personal reason there's</r>
<r t="238.65">probably a very personal reason behind what all of us do</r>
<r t="243.65">and my personal reason is that it's good for us and it's good for our</r>
<r t="247.66">family my husband and i found that the company we found that this community by</r>
<r t="252.8">in general was a very happy friendly place for us for example</r>
<r t="257.94">well links foundation invited me to an invite only event again right near wall street</r>
<r t="263.82">on in manhattan it was very high and event most of the people there running</r>
<r t="268.69">multimillion multibillion dollar companies it was</r>
<r t="272.63">and just to test their strength i asked him can i bring my son</r>
<r t="277.85">just to see how open and welcoming they work and sure enough not only they</r>
<r t="282.25">welcomed but the people attending also welcome them</r>
<r t="285.16">we've been welcomed at conferences</r>
<r t="287.69">we've been welcomed in this is our oldest son</r>
<r t="291.91">he's the reason why we started</r>
<r t="294.38">a whole second all the sun is the reason why start is reason in the</r>
<r t="297.22">first place and just as a quick intro "'cause" i don't recognise most of you</r>
<r t="301.51">so super quick interesting you know who we are back in two thousand six our</r>
<r t="305.68">son cory</r>
<r t="308.44">wiped one of our machines and put it into on it because you sick of</r>
<r t="312.51">it crashing</r>
<r t="315.53">and i long story short i happened to notice that you had some really cool</r>
<r t="321.02">graphics on screen a he'd installed barrel turn all the effects now companies fusion</r>
<r t="326.63">and it looks really cool and that's how i heard about free open source software</r>
<r t="332.68">and i said hey</r>
<r t="334.77">can you do that's all or computers</r>
<r t="337.43">"'cause" of course we had quite a few that so the companies run by me</r>
<r t="340.53">and my husband that we do not deal with that every day work in berkeley</r>
<r t="345.17">or and we also have a shop it is healing covering us relation</r>
<r t="348.79">we get to travel to things like this and do work on a</r>
<r t="355.38">more philosophical able okay but more important than we are who are the people who</r>
<r t="361.06">are using the code that you've written because we're kind of just to pass through</r>
<r t="365.48">between you guys and the people who are loading for you know but all sorts</r>
<r t="369.95">of different gestures on their laptops</r>
<r t="371.92">when we first opened and february two thousand seven</r>
<r t="375.88">we</r>
<r t="378.01">founder that most of the people ordering from us were developers it was but we</r>
<r t="381.44">didn't advertise "'cause" we not that could business</r>
<r t="384.34">but we found that it was mostly developers long time free open source software gonna</r>
<r t="390.01">linux users</r>
<r t="391.3">they were people who knew what they were doing they were people you had built</r>
<r t="395.94">computers of their own now i brought a bunch of screwdrivers when we first opened</r>
<r t="401.44">we have the policy of</r>
<r t="404.82">are our warranty it was we reserve you're right on your hardware and so we</r>
<r t="409.71">shipped every computer with a screwdriver</r>
<r t="412.6">so please</r>
<r t="418.44">i really messing with because of his machine way to go somebody's appeared anyway</r>
<r t="424.27">we found that this was the ideal type of persons work with we loved working</r>
<r t="429.05">with developers and it was just fine we worked with a lot of people it</r>
<r t="432.52">bend and the field for a long time</r>
<r t="434.44">there's a lot of history we didn't understand but we've comments most of it we</r>
<r t="438.42">see we found that a lot of system administrators of course we're using the various</r>
<r t="442.77">distress and wanting computers that didn't have to deal with the preinstalled linux we also</r>
<r t="447.61">found that there were preinstalled windows excuse me</r>
<r t="452.49">we found that there were people of every age and every variety</r>
<r t="457.55">at one point well at one point we had kid our shop in berkeley isn't</r>
<r t="463.67">open to the public</r>
<r t="465.26">generally other people stop by</r>
<r t="468.29">and one day we had a kids stop by use actually a little older than</r>
<r t="471.64">this guy the source and</r>
<r t="473.43">is about fourteen twelve fourteen is middle school kids a lot even in high school</r>
<r t="479.66">yet</r>
<r t="480.77">and he stopped by any said i heard use of computers and we're thinking great</r>
<r t="484.55">this guy's probably gonna break into the store later this light</r>
<r t="487.19">but he said i'd like to buy a computer and i'd like to buy with</r>
<r t="490.92">big coins</r>
<r t="492.19">is also the quite bizarre</r>
<r t="495.35">so we're like</r>
<r t="496.99">it's just a kid but those are the types of people that are attracted to</r>
<r t="501.14">the kind of software that you code</r>
<r t="503.38">and we found that now here's the part that will hopefully what may surprise you</r>
<r t="507.79">we found a segment of the population that we never anticipated</r>
<r t="512.84">we had one lady call in the early days who is in her seventies</r>
<r t="517.39">and her what she did in her retired years is that she helped her older</r>
<r t="524.17">case in here me such as an or seventies who helped are older friends</r>
<r t="528.27">what wiped windows and install gnu linux just rose on their machines</r>
<r t="532.94">and she told me what one friend said that really</r>
<r t="537.44">struck</r>
<r t="539.07">but they did have the whole essence of why we do what we do she</r>
<r t="542.29">said she installed</r>
<r t="543.91">free open source software so that she is because her friend didn't have time to</r>
<r t="549.71">mess with blue screens</r>
<r t="551.54">when you think about that that's a very humanitarian powerful thing there at the end</r>
<r t="556.94">of their life is people are you know well</r>
<r t="560.23">and they don't have time to mess with bugs now that's i know it's a</r>
<r t="564.81">very bad things that anyway so but they don't have time and that's the concept</r>
<r t="569.94">that i hope we can take with this is that any incremental changes we make</r>
<r t="574.92">then increase the difficulty of the user interface or other aspects of</r>
<r t="582.13">the software make it very difficult for people like this we also had one guy</r>
<r t="587.24">in the early days at least to answer the phone and every now and then</r>
<r t="590.28">i still go back and answer we had one guy call in any said i</r>
<r t="593.93">have a friend</r>
<r t="595.28">who helps me whatever i get bugs on my machine so we helps me a</r>
<r t="598.45">lot</r>
<r t="599.56">and he said he will help me anymore unless i get a machine that's running</r>
<r t="604.71">i dunno debian i forgot what it was</r>
<r t="607.09">and i thought that was pretty funny just that was he had to do that</r>
<r t="610.5">we also besides regular people we also supply places like lawrence berkeley labs that's in</r>
<r t="615.99">berkeley california that's where many of the elements on the periodic table were discovered it's</r>
<r t="620.1">the main research lab funded by the department of energy by the us government we</r>
<r t="624.65">also an or something new zealand we settled here catalyst which is a large global</r>
<r t="631.81">software company aimed at only for an open source and they're amazing big do amazing</r>
<r t="639.34">work at</r>
<r t="640.31">promoting it we've also helped various parts of fedex</r>
<r t="643.81">who need data crunching machines</r>
<r t="646.76">also jet propulsion labs funds nasa</r>
<r t="651.51">we've also helps and the school labs now we are so grateful that we are</r>
<r t="657.76">not only by anybody we have said no to investors and so it's just my</r>
<r t="663.12">husband and i and this point we haven't found any investors to</r>
<r t="667.4">understand the history as they don't understand is goods we do then no</r>
<r t="675.95">but for example we had a school come to us and say we need thirty</r>
<r t="679.66">computers in here the specs</r>
<r t="681.84">and we said that's wonderful but did you know you can get them for free</r>
<r t="685.42">at the computer recycling centre</r>
<r t="687.23">now normally a business can't do that they have to take the order and go</r>
<r t="691.14">through it but since we are privately owned we can do that</r>
<r t="694.66">but we do give but we do fund other schools with</r>
<r t="698.77">parent machines</r>
<r t="701.03">and were able to support there are some of course a surprising number of children</r>
<r t="705.95">use machines that you can't really see but the computer in the bottom right and</r>
<r t="708.95">whatever in than areas that has the lights inside and people buy them as night</r>
<r t="713.46">lights for their children</r>
<r t="716.13">"'cause" they're pretty red lights we like but we found that all yes</r>
<r t="722.7">second</r>
<r t="724.83">no actually no we're now we don't i that's our daughter it just can't keep</r>
<r t="730.47">that's great as you just once it's inside</r>
<r t="733.75">so why haven't you heard of us and because we fly under the radar we're</r>
<r t="738.03">building a very solid base most silicon valley companies prefer to boom and bust they</r>
<r t="743.62">get their big</r>
<r t="746.05">you know i figure investors and</r>
<r t="750.59">but what we'd rather grow for the long term</r>
<r t="754.81">so far working on north america that's done that covered astral asia we have a</r>
<r t="760.41">covered next are setting up shop in london</r>
<r t="763.8">well like i said we're little</r>
<r t="767.15">where it eve at compared to the other builders out there only to other builders</r>
<r t="772.39">that are building that are that are in the global coverage for getting linux machines</r>
<r t="778.08">at least that i know of that as an system seventy six system seventy six</r>
<r t="782.48">is focused only on are going to so we don't consider them a competitor we</r>
<r t="786.71">work with any viable distraught keeping in mind that some of those people i showed</r>
<r t="792.42">you earlier are the people who are getting the machines the machines can't have bugs</r>
<r t="797.09">they can have</r>
<r t="798.85">major obstacles that you need to overcome when they open the machine they needed to</r>
<r t="803.54">just work</r>
<r t="805.69">that's they needed to</r>
<r t="808.12">sorry using somebody else's tech raise their so back and we're now we're now and</r>
<r t="812.48">number two why this hardware matter okay when i came here in the first day</r>
<r t="817.07">i looked around to see what computers people are using "'cause" that's what a geek</r>
<r t="820.47">you heard reject us</r>
<r t="821.84">send i look like twenty five percent they'll twenty five percent know about twenty five</r>
<r t="826.79">percent apple twenty five percent other but can you raise your hand for</r>
<r t="831.96">i'm sure many of you on more than one laptop but i raise your hand</r>
<r t="835.7">for every type of laptop you own wanted out</r>
<r t="840.55">okay</r>
<r t="842.66">okay who wants one double</r>
<r t="844.92">wow</r>
<r t="847.32">good quality hardware apple</r>
<r t="851.2">okay other</r>
<r t="854.22">cool okay that's relatively balance a little bit more a little bit off from what</r>
<r t="859">i thought thank you</r>
<r t="861.42">systematic your C K Y this hardware matter</r>
<r t="865.26">now it's my guess</r>
<r t="867.42">that most of you don't really care what hardware you buy you just wanted to</r>
<r t="871.17">work you want to be solid and you do you don't wanna have issues with</r>
<r t="874.39">it</r>
<r t="877.47">you don't believe hardware matters that's okay most people don't believe it matters that's just</r>
<r t="884.85">a from my point of view i misunderstood a massive</r>
<r t="888.75">painfully large misunderstanding</r>
<r t="893.15">earlier</r>
<r t="894.48">this year</r>
<r t="897.11">last year earlier last year</r>
<r t="900.96">i had a long conversation with cory doctor of it was i think sixty three</r>
<r t="906.22">emails back and forth and back and forth my only goal in the email was</r>
<r t="909.78">to convince and the hardware matters</r>
<r t="912.13">he ended up writing essentially a love letter about our company online which would have</r>
<r t="917.44">been nice if we shipped computers to the people in who most</r>
<r t="922.26">prefix column we got a lot of people in europe saying i still</r>
<r t="928.25">so but my main the thing i got from that conversation is that it's</r>
<r t="936.16">there's the only way i was able to convince and the hardware matters with by</r>
<r t="940.04">talking about U E F I secure but now i'm sure you've heard about it</r>
<r t="945.04">and if you understand i'm sick you have a secure grip on a deep</r>
<r t="951.31">level then you could you know for about</r>
<r t="954.07">a minute half</r>
<r t="955.41">if not i'm gonna give a quick summary of a talk i gave it fast</r>
<r t="958.98">down</r>
<r t="959.92">earlier this year about you have five</r>
<r t="963.16">you have fight is hardwired into the motherboard</r>
<r t="967.82">it is you have five replaces the bios</r>
<r t="973.66">it's in between operating system which you guys deal with</r>
<r t="977.46">and hard one from where the hardware which we deal with and the from or</r>
<r t="981.45">which the companies deal with</r>
<r t="984.73">the heart of the bios the original code what it does what you have what</r>
<r t="990.64">the bias what you if i does is it helps all video cards look like</r>
<r t="994.26">video cards it helps all memory sticks or like every six all it helps</r>
<r t="1000.89">and a manufacturing level and also helps</r>
<r t="1003.73">on a developer level the bias was written back and these are the hottest coolest</r>
<r t="1008.92">machines you can build</r>
<r t="1011.11">the fact that it is last in this is mind boggling</r>
<r t="1016.22">but the truth is that the original by also so poorly specified i look</r>
<r t="1021.49">they needed updates "'cause" it was causing you headaches and it was causing the owens</r>
<r t="1026.53">the goal of U E F I was admirable but the implementation leaves a lot</r>
<r t="1031.16">to be desired is the nicest thing that's a quote from my husband earl as</r>
<r t="1035.31">the nicest thing you can possibly say</r>
<r t="1038.82">essentially secure do is just a little blob of code within you if i and</r>
<r t="1045.36">it's encryption key that checks to see if drivers are certified with the matching key</r>
<r t="1049.24">and the only execute certified code</r>
<r t="1053.66">now</r>
<r t="1054.68">that sounds like it would increase security on your system right</r>
<r t="1059.57">and it does the security can be good and security can be bad</r>
<r t="1063.67">because who's the gatekeeper</r>
<r t="1066.82">well here's what's happened so far actually even before two thousand eleven two thousand twelve</r>
<r t="1071.82">systems are shipping with you have i no one really noticed</r>
<r t="1075.21">we saw it but that's only "'cause" working williams</r>
<r t="1079.32">in august two thousand twelve was when my alarms all of our alarms at building</r>
<r t="1084.17">level one off because you have can be computers are shipping programs are shipping with</r>
<r t="1089.1">you if i enabled</r>
<r t="1091.22">most of desktop motherboards have you have i</r>
<r t="1094.43">many of the laptop motherboards had you have five servers the same but there already</r>
<r t="1097.95">lockdown environment doesn't really affect them as much tablets have a different architecture are doesn't</r>
<r t="1103.36">have a by also no you have five or at phones what harm and some</r>
<r t="1106.07">laptops which is the crown book use corporate so hopeless super quick snaps</r>
<r t="1111.22">now there are a few solutions that work with secure be now</r>
<r t="1116.32">so that you can avoid</r>
<r t="1119.39">to get avoid am some a lot can issues you can use a tool to</r>
<r t="1122.44">generate your private key a lot of work only people like the people in this</r>
<r t="1127.08">room would enjoy doing that you "'cause" i don't know a stream of the private</r>
<r t="1130.08">key where you can put a public key and the bias you have five but</r>
<r t="1133.41">you have to have traction for that one</r>
<r t="1136.06">here's a potential who knows if this is how it will progress but it potential</r>
<r t="1141.38">this is what i'm still you read this one this is what companies when they</r>
<r t="1146.83">sit down in the border and they say okay what's our long term plan what's</r>
<r t="1150.2">our end goal</r>
<r t="1151.63">what are we aiming for</r>
<r t="1154.7">and that's</r>
<r t="1156.54">the goal for you if i adoption</r>
<r t="1162.7">now i owe em level so what we do is</r>
<r t="1167.18">we go to the factories right now we don't build their own motherboards of course</r>
<r t="1170.62">but we go to the factories</r>
<r t="1172.62">and we have depending on the size in the order the bigger the order them</r>
<r t="1177.05">or say we have and how it's built</r>
<r t="1181.4">we have five built and you have to do</r>
<r t="1186.18">a pretty large order to convince censorship it with secure be turned off</r>
<r t="1191.43">or the thing so if</r>
<r t="1193.32">but it's change the world's change from when you could go and just buy a</r>
<r t="1198.1">laptop wipe it and install your favourite is true every windows a machine now ships</r>
<r t="1203.11">was secure bit enable</r>
<r t="1204.93">so yes</r>
<r t="1207">used to be the power of the individual we use to be able to do</r>
<r t="1209.44">that so now if you want to build a really cool machine like used to</r>
<r t="1213.21">be able to do you get a bunch this is jan about ten thousand people</r>
<r t="1216.36">model and the shot of course but if you wanna get about that many people</r>
<r t="1220.58">who want the exact same specs you do and order some computers who go for</r>
<r t="1224.39">it or we need to belittle supply chain in order to support harder the works</r>
<r t="1229.5">so how do you disable</r>
<r t="1232.41">secure boot you get into the bios for you if i set up</r>
<r t="1236.86">there sometimes are changeable it's different for every system for right now</r>
<r t="1242.12">sometimes it have ten sometimes is escape sometimes it's delete it will become more complicated</r>
<r t="1246.35">with time that's just how corporations work</r>
<r t="1249.13">you find a secure be option you select disable if the system has fast but</r>
<r t="1254">i'm enabled you're screwed because it disables the keyboard now i am getting to a</r>
<r t="1257.73">point that sounds terribly boring but i'm getting to a point</r>
<r t="1260.9">go and take a minute read that</r>
<r t="1267.97">you got it</r>
<r t="1273.62">if it has no fast but it automatically puts you in the scarab it automatically</r>
<r t="1279.81">will see and so that's how you disable it</r>
<r t="1286.22">that's a turn off</r>
<r t="1288.06">so but do you think there are regular users are gonna do that they're gonna</r>
<r t="1291.87">be able to do that little long press the keys fast enough to be able</r>
<r t="1294.63">to get in</r>
<r t="1295.98">they're gonna walk away</r>
<r t="1299.02">now why does it matter whether we have</r>
<r t="1302.72">these people using our systems are not most companies don't the well wide why does</r>
<r t="1308.51">it matter whether people are using i'm i am so grateful to be don't foundation</r>
<r t="1313.64">is being led by a brilliant leader in the very so whatever you talk to</r>
<r t="1320.62">somebody in an organisation if they can summarise in a sensor to what they'd organisations</r>
<r t="1327.25">goal fantastic they have a clear vision they can help guide people in the right</r>
<r t="1331.23">direction the first question to ask karen was</r>
<r t="1335.3">what's important to you it wasn't there was no hesitation it wasn't even apples and</r>
<r t="1339.83">it was one word and that that's very clear when i gave you have i</r>
<r t="1346.28">talk a fast am even logo on pointed out</r>
<r t="1350.68">you know when working on our own projects it's really it feels really good to</r>
<r t="1354.79">be able to just do it on your own or you know work with a</r>
<r t="1357.27">small group unfortunately we do need users</r>
<r t="1360.44">now here's</r>
<r t="1362.85">why secure boot is so subtly</r>
<r t="1367.54">dangerous</r>
<r t="1368.97">because they call that secure but and disabling something that secure makes you a bad</r>
<r t="1373.7">person feeds disable security on a primal level people create security this is a constant</r>
<r t="1379.43">so people who are just now coming into the field even if they can figure</r>
<r t="1383.24">out how to disable secure based</r>
<r t="1385.18">there is something on a very primal level causing them to</r>
<r t="1389.17">pause wait a minute i'm disabling the security on the system that on so many</r>
<r t="1393.45">levels that's not a good thing</r>
<r t="1395.89">that's even chip on nichols is the one of our favourite media guys</r>
<r t="1401.65">that's pretty obvious it's not really about security but we call secure because that's a</r>
<r t="1406.26">good marketing strategy any gives you two choices</r>
<r t="1408.7">who right now you have two choices</r>
<r t="1412.3">okay i wrote a post i wrote a quick little article about</r>
<r t="1417.76">secure but awhile ago now how many you have but you're on machines</r>
<r t="1422.56">have any bill your desktop a laptop well no that's not you take the screws</r>
<r t="1428.05">up you gotta know hardware you've mastered that you seen what it is engine even</r>
<r t="1433.51">if you just wipe the machine and loaded a free and open just row on</r>
<r t="1436.81">it gives you the ability to essentially flips the bird to proprietary just rose</r>
<r t="1446.61">what secure does now if you are queasy or</r>
<r t="1451.2">don't like it's explicit graphics look away for the second actually knows coming up in</r>
<r t="1455.72">the middle</r>
<r t="1456.64">so</r>
<r t="1457.62">no this is my building your own systems changed it's changed the world for the</r>
<r t="1462.93">makers were slowly adjusting females of if makers were just in time but</r>
<r t="1467.75">since the beginning till now we've all had the luxury of tinkering</r>
<r t="1471.15">but what secure because and this is intentional at the corporate level as the det</r>
<r t="1475.96">to removes your ability to flip the bird to the proprietary corporation</r>
<r t="1480.97">okay</r>
<r t="1481.82">we but</r>
<r t="1483.21">i believe there is a flip side there is a good side and a bad</r>
<r t="1487.24">side everything i'm a diehard optimist</r>
<r t="1490.19">you know that little spiel that sound like a</r>
<r t="1493.28">the good side of you neophyte secure there is that for the first time ever</r>
<r t="1499.69">it gives us the chance</r>
<r t="1501.55">to make</r>
<r t="1504.09">free of source of core look like a worldwide cool thing</r>
<r t="1508.41">throughout the last few decades</r>
<r t="1512">all of our after all the effort of all the makers and geeks has been</r>
<r t="1516.33">diluted by getting one particular just rollover than one particular type of machine we've dealt</r>
<r t="1522.5">with</r>
<r t="1524.4">thousands tens of thousands hundreds of thousands of different types of machines going on do</r>
<r t="1528.52">with different just rosewood different configurations we've hammer so many problems</r>
<r t="1534.57">and while that's been extremely valuable in helping make</r>
<r t="1538.94">getting linux a very solid</r>
<r t="1542.94">chunk of code</r>
<r t="1546.57">it's</r>
<r t="1547.74">has made it so that our effort has been very diluted</r>
<r t="1552.74">so now that's now that we</r>
<r t="1557.81">now that's now that machines have to come was secure blue either enable disable this</r>
<r t="1562.95">ultimate different ching factor</r>
<r t="1564.68">now when you when people ask about you have a secure blue and white hardware</r>
<r t="1568.79">matters the best answer you can give is that it's complicated</r>
<r t="1572.67">the just shows actually are going to this one</r>
<r t="1575.08">when just shows were given the choice and most just shows have sorry ago when</r>
<r t="1579.82">just rules were given the choice of you either sign with microsoft or you suffer</r>
<r t="1585.74">death by obscurity</r>
<r t="1587.59">and the obscurity as because it's it will become and it is becoming harder and</r>
<r t="1591.91">harder to load windows on windows machine the clock basically started in august two thousand</r>
<r t="1596.57">twelve</r>
<r t="1597.59">any machine that ships with windows comes to secure bit enabled that just means all</r>
<r t="1602.13">the hardware that's out there right now is ageing owl</r>
<r t="1605.53">and slowly one by one will realise the problem</r>
<r t="1609.33">so they were given and then and then possible choice just by obscurity or that's</r>
<r t="1613.03">by signing with a company that they just didn't necessarily agree with</r>
<r t="1618.92">so</r>
<r t="1620.25">all the different just rose and all the different</r>
<r t="1622.91">house's that they've built</r>
<r t="1626.82">when's your bit of a devastating experience know how many of you have seen the</r>
<r t="1629.6">corporation</r>
<r t="1631.54">i would be okay so only handful so give the hopefully thirty second summary</r>
<r t="1637.48">american corporations mikes also american corporation a lot of the people who manufacture hardware american</r>
<r t="1644.43">corporations</r>
<r t="1645.72">by law</r>
<r t="1648.44">corporations have to do whatever we'll bring in the most profit there are good people</r>
<r t="1654.43">working at microsoft we but there are good people working there</r>
<r t="1658.07">who have good intent but by law a corporation</r>
<r t="1664.26">do something that will lose shareholders value</r>
<r t="1668.88">people can get in big trouble for that</r>
<r t="1671">so by law whether they want to or not they have to do whatever brings</r>
<r t="1675.38">in the most profit</r>
<r t="1677.09">there is no upper capture to earnings</r>
<r t="1680.63">they have to earn as much as they possibly can</r>
<r t="1683.45">now in the united states of corporation is treated as if it was a human</r>
<r t="1687.48">being</r>
<r t="1689.17">i get it has no ethics no values no nothing it has one goal make</r>
<r t="1695.47">money</r>
<r t="1698.57">and that's a very dangerous thing and you'll see in a minute</r>
<r t="1702.25">i have a good example that</r>
<r t="1704">so we see i hopefully i painted a bit of the picture now why hardware</r>
<r t="1709.39">and software need to work together i'm sure you've seen now as a developer who</r>
<r t="1714.42">doesn't have access to the audience</r>
<r t="1716.8">you bang your head against lots of problems that you cannot fix i see something</r>
<r t="1722.27">like that you cannot fix</r>
<r t="1724.53">because you can i get the harder manufactures to do what you want them to</r>
<r t="1727.94">do</r>
<r t="1728.98">we're right at that intersection between</r>
<r t="1734.13">and we do see possibilities</r>
<r t="1736.57">it told us when we saw all the different distrust signing with microsoft essentially what</r>
<r t="1743.4">they did is they</r>
<r t="1746.12">it smacks of sense encryption key is that it</r>
<r t="1750.02">so</r>
<r t="1752.43">summary you have five is good and much needed secured was poorly implemented complicated is</r>
<r t="1757.64">the point of being dangerous there are solutions the solutions are difficult but doable if</r>
<r t="1761.25">we could what break communicate and</r>
<r t="1763.06">the part we get to we get to the happy part now</r>
<r t="1765.4">how this is the last part how to make a good i'm globally loved</r>
<r t="1772.1">long term now</r>
<r t="1774.71">i don't have the answers</r>
<r t="1776.99">and a lot of the problems but i do have i don't have the answers</r>
<r t="1780.1">but i will give you one example of something that we've been through that's helped</r>
<r t="1784.63">shape how we do what we do now most year software people right obviously</r>
<r t="1790.21">and how many of you have worked on a project</r>
<r t="1794.56">where you had a deadline</r>
<r t="1797.13">and you weren't able to do what needed to be done in time at that</r>
<r t="1801.11">and by the time at that deadline it</r>
<r t="1804.28">and you are had to make compromises that seriously her quality</r>
<r t="1814.25">that's an unfortunate situation that happens</r>
<r t="1818.94">whenever you have deadlines</r>
<r t="1826.19">the one is kind of</r>
<r t="1828.67">because problems throughout the organisation</r>
<r t="1833.89">only that affirmative so we realised that if we said not to investors we didn't</r>
<r t="1840.15">have to have deadlines</r>
<r t="1843.48">the only negative consequences and not having deadlines as it sometimes people get mad they</r>
<r t="1848.86">wanna know what date when the next have what's gonna be released or whatever and</r>
<r t="1853.23">so sometimes people get mad at that</r>
<r t="1855.15">but it's a heck of a lot better than doublings the compromise quality</r>
<r t="1859.4">so that's just one example of something we've learned</r>
<r t="1863.86">actually no i didn't get the full story that and i here are the three</r>
<r t="1867.5">guiding principles that are the</r>
<r t="1870.22">situations</r>
<r t="1872">that have helped us come up with three guiding principles for potential solution</r>
<r t="1877.8">our tech support</r>
<r t="1879.22">if you can see a good enough that the guy doing is on tech support</r>
<r t="1882.47">he's cleaning out a system he must are heard that you need to clean the</r>
<r t="1884.89">fan from time to time</r>
<r t="1886.9">is that the water at suppose is using this as blitz as you're doing it</r>
<r t="1890.6">wrong</r>
<r t="1891.73">okay so we take support quite often not always but quite often you call tech</r>
<r t="1896.92">support and you're talking to somebody who may have never even touched the machine you're</r>
<r t="1901.47">trying to get support on</r>
<r t="1903.21">and sometimes six i'm i doubt there are many people in your call tech support</r>
<r t="1907.03">ever you probably just deal with it yourselves</r>
<r t="1910.38">and or maybe you have or maybe you are on the other end of the</r>
<r t="1913.21">phone line and stuff</r>
<r t="1914.86">so one thing we decided to do is one day i said wait a minute</r>
<r t="1918.73">what i could call in the tech support and i could talk to the person</r>
<r t="1923.49">who not only use my particular machine but we built my particular machine or at</r>
<r t="1927.91">least work the next to the guy or one who don't my particular machine</r>
<r t="1931.99">that's why not we're building the shops like clean and small why not</r>
<r t="1936.52">and so something happy happened</r>
<r t="1939.15">when i found out that it's easy the system in a we also supply stanford's</r>
<r t="1946.41">a i'll at the artificial intelligence lab which is really cool</r>
<r t="1950.46">and one of the google founders has robotics lab that we've worked with</r>
<r t="1954.43">but it's easy a system administrator at stanford called and says hey i'm having a</r>
<r t="1959.82">really hard time with my stride a</r>
<r t="1962.89">she wants to talk to the guy who built it</r>
<r t="1965.39">also i found out that the person who built it they're gonna be a lot</r>
<r t="1970.24">more careful in their bill they're gonna tie up records inside the desktop a lot</r>
<r t="1974.06">more neatly they're gonna go for perfection if they know they might get a call</r>
<r t="1978.55">from the person every see that machine</r>
<r t="1981.16">so we decided to build tech support</r>
<r t="1984.41">with the shortest distance possible between accountability</r>
<r t="1990.7">and consequence</r>
<r t="1992.77">between the person who built and the person who uses</r>
<r t="1996.74">between the person who has responsibility for building a machine properly and the person who</r>
<r t="2001.85">imposes the consequence for the quality of that machine</r>
<r t="2005.43">shorter slime possible between accountability and consequences</r>
<r t="2009.3">dataset that's just a guiding principle that we're using as we try to figure out</r>
<r t="2014.51">where to go next in dealing with</r>
<r t="2017.2">the different just rose</r>
<r t="2019.5">berlin i spend today in manhattan before we came here and if any of you</r>
<r t="2025.64">are geeky enough to enjoy visiting you big the coolest places throughout the world the</r>
<r t="2031.6">o'reilly published something called the geek atlas</r>
<r t="2035.06">that was so i don't know about a hundred places throughout the world that have</r>
<r t="2039.86">really geeky cool things have this is well lock museum the john as possible lock</r>
<r t="2044.74">museum in manhattan</r>
<r t="2046.71">it's impossible to find</r>
<r t="2049.01">well it's hard to find and when you get there they said always not open</r>
<r t="2052.38">to the public so you kind of have to hack your way and</r>
<r t="2055.79">social hiking</r>
<r t="2057.08">and so we got in and we got to see locks that have been built</r>
<r t="2062.44">since the beginning of time since they were building blocks out of wood</r>
<r t="2066.77">it's an old musty museum and it was a it was delightful</r>
<r t="2072.03">back when they were making happens</r>
<r t="2074.41">for security they were making these to protect bank vaults</r>
<r t="2080.92">the patent system actually worked</r>
<r t="2083.85">and it worked well for building bank for security and to hear that any kind</r>
<r t="2090.46">of patent law is working well that was the over so my husband i took</r>
<r t="2095.9">a little bit of time to talk about how patents how the patents worked with</r>
<r t="2100.97">walks over time</r>
<r t="2102.93">and the way it worked is that everybody every manufacturer every builder made an incremental</r>
<r t="2109.08">improvement was able to patent that improvement but they didn't whole blood money to the</r>
<r t="2113.7">previous</r>
<r t="2115.37">improvements</r>
<r t="2117.95">so for example if apple is</r>
<r t="2121.97">is patenting the movement of swiping your finger from the left to the right there's</r>
<r t="2127.81">no chance like that that's not how the block industry worked the lock industry</r>
<r t="2133.87">and said that they weren't allowed to patent you have a keen you have a</r>
<r t="2137.43">locking you put one into the other</r>
<r t="2139.62">they were allowed to patent things such as this is the time lock with a</r>
<r t="2143.01">specific type of time device dial and this allowed for refinement of the hardware that</r>
<r t="2150.7">was healthy for example the time locked didn't work it was actually to secure the</r>
<r t="2155.84">bank managers were scared that they wouldn't be able to get into their vaults when</r>
<r t="2158.96">they wanted to but neither could the bad guys but still it didn't do well</r>
<r t="2163.16">so we don't use it</r>
<r t="2164.59">someone has man i sat down at</r>
<r t="2168.19">at it in this little teeny little museum in manhattan and talked about what does</r>
<r t="2172.6">the how could this possibly there's some there were some good things happening in this</r>
<r t="2177.94">field historically how criminals principles guide us and what we do</r>
<r t="2184.12">we realise okay just on a very simplistic level</r>
<r t="2188.4">where the hardware where the where the box with a lock softwares the key</r>
<r t="2194.11">you guys have the code that allows these machines to run in the first place</r>
<r t="2200.02">but at the key the box isn't any good that the box</r>
<r t="2203.98">the key can only scratch your back</r>
<r t="2209.4">keep software hardware separate</r>
<r t="2212.36">but together</r>
<r t="2214.34">one of the things that the software industry is done with their patent says that</r>
<r t="2218.22">they've trying to meld actually unlock so that they're one and the same unit and</r>
<r t="2222.72">they become a break they become unusable we can no longer take them open</r>
<r t="2226.56">and explore them and learn from them</r>
<r t="2229.01">the third principle we've learned my backgrounds in education</r>
<r t="2233.07">and one of the things i've been fascinated by is that there's no correlation or</r>
<r t="2238.35">even causation there's no correlation causation between money and learning</r>
<r t="2242.66">people have this insane idea and i call it insane because we keep making the</r>
<r t="2247.35">same mistake again and again</r>
<r t="2249.51">that the more money you throw it schools the better cancel learn</r>
<r t="2253.75">and it doesn't work that way learning has to come from the inside the money</r>
<r t="2259.28">does not correlate for "'cause" learning so how do we</r>
<r t="2263.95">it so that's just i i'm not gonna do additions education but just that there</r>
<r t="2268.61">is no correlation</r>
<r t="2270.29">money doesn't solve it and as soon as the focus shifts to the money and</r>
<r t="2274.36">all the learning</r>
<r t="2276.01">you lack integrity it goes from learning is the goal to money and learning</r>
<r t="2281.49">you lose focus and your high risk of working against yourself</r>
<r t="2284.92">so those are our three guiding principles accountability in consequence keep software hardware separable working</r>
<r t="2289.56">together never let money make the big decisions</r>
<r t="2292.55">so</r>
<r t="2294.5">in our early days when we first up and shop we had just rose approaching</r>
<r t="2299.05">us saying hey you can you should are destroying your machines and give us a</r>
<r t="2302.96">cut for each machine you should for the just row give us ten bucks or</r>
<r t="2306.99">whatever for each machine you ship with our wonderful destroy</r>
<r t="2311.09">and</r>
<r t="2312.88">it makes complete sense from a business standpoint</r>
<r t="2317.11">but for some reason we felt this is wrong and we couldn't pinpoint and it</r>
<r t="2321.08">wasn't in cell block a museum and a few other things that we realise wait</r>
<r t="2324.91">a minute this soon as you enter into a contractual agreement with the stroll you</r>
<r t="2329.22">lose</r>
<r t="2330.3">some of that integrity you have deadlines</r>
<r t="2334.21">you put an extra layer between accountability in consequence</r>
<r t="2337.9">you're no longer separate</r>
<r t="2340">and the money is making the decision</r>
<r t="2342.88">and so we wanted to work with a good know community a more directly but</r>
<r t="2348.53">we couldn't figure out how</r>
<r t="2351.08">i am so grateful they can has taken has a i'm grateful that you've done</r>
<r t="2355.44">what you've done and build such a solid base</r>
<r t="2358.13">because back to the first slide of being well positioned</r>
<r t="2361.75">i would love nothing more</r>
<r t="2364.13">then if you guys did your industry</r>
<r t="2366.55">or if we were to support industry</r>
<r t="2371.45">the reason why the numbers so well position is that you have all of the</r>
<r t="2375.38">puzzle well nearly all of the puzzle pieces but they haven't yet then put together</r>
<r t="2381.1">into one distraught we have people and i showed you some of the people who</r>
<r t="2384.94">love the cold the ease of the you why older people who don't have time</r>
<r t="2390.06">to mess with anything that isn't beautiful and simple in its most basic form</r>
<r t="2395.93">so that's my that's what i would love to see happen</r>
<r t="2400.31">but</r>
<r t="2403.53">nobody and again on community has ever come to us and said hey can you</r>
<r t="2407.58">give us can you give us a cat or can we do a deal and</r>
<r t="2410.48">that's not how they're gonna foundation or any other part of it works from what</r>
<r t="2414.6">i understand</r>
<r t="2415.62">and i appreciate that i have what you and i thank you for that because</r>
<r t="2422.35">that would be the wrong direction to go</r>
<r t="2426.78">so i'm not exactly sure how</r>
<r t="2430.02">it's going to work the one thing that my husband and i came up with</r>
<r t="2433.64">that i'm sure will talk to people about but i tend to be kind of</r>
<r t="2436.65">as open as possible about these things</r>
<r t="2438.84">is that it's a support the gonna foundation are going on developers or whatever maybe</r>
<r t="2445.03">hire if you maybe go ahead and give back to the community based on the</r>
<r t="2450.51">number system sold but do it on a voluntary basis</r>
<r t="2454.57">just do it is donations</r>
<r t="2456.58">that allows separation</r>
<r t="2459.36">that allows</r>
<r t="2461.37">it</r>
<r t="2462.27">one of the reasons why the schools don't the schools don't work</r>
<r t="2466.79">is that sometimes the more money we throw kids we don't give them the option</r>
<r t="2471.81">of failing</r>
<r t="2473.37">we lived in your dell here in austin texas</r>
<r t="2476.55">where the kids were not allowed to fail</r>
<r t="2478.78">they had a hundred percent passing on nearly all of their stay standardised tests if</r>
<r t="2483.24">you're not from the us that probably doesn't make a lot of sense it was</r>
<r t="2486.62">basically forced for success</r>
<r t="2489.65">and there are these for kids on drugs</r>
<r t="2492.38">just wishing they would at least have the choice to either succeed or fail and</r>
<r t="2497.22">i believe that's very important if the just row wants to sign with microsoft and</r>
<r t="2503.86">have a now we still support it would to and fedora and all of the</r>
<r t="2509.08">others were still shipping machines actually going to start number one</r>
<r t="2513.49">D fall selection when you're selecting it's a stronger site</r>
<r t="2518.35">but</r>
<r t="2521.61">unfortunately that's because is the best option currently available for the people that need to</r>
<r t="2527.16">use these machines</r>
<r t="2529.64">i would love to have a different option</r>
<r t="2532.33">a more pure option we also support risk all which is a lot more much</r>
<r t="2536.42">more pure</r>
<r t="2539.9">and so on the on our you know where partying last night so</r>
<r t="2545.39">i like that's all the heavy parts over so every presentation i like to do</r>
<r t="2550.65">something fun at the end</r>
<r t="2552.99">i like to do a quiz</r>
<r t="2556.19">and give away stuff "'cause" it's fun or not so i brought some keyboards another</r>
<r t="2561.95">thing i don't know if you all noticed but on your keyboard if you look</r>
<r t="2565.9">down hopefully some of you guys have stickers over your start key is pretty much</r>
<r t="2570.89">all of these machines except for if you think you are not reason machines</r>
<r t="2575.92">every not back in the late eighties nineties microsoft another brilliant marketing mail</r>
<r t="2582.37">okay so this do we have the stickers</r>
<r t="2586.94">we the mikes have to brilliant marketing move there's a key on every keyboard manufactured</r>
<r t="2592.34">in china and we much only channel</r>
<r t="2595.3">that is called the start key or the home key but their logo on it</r>
<r t="2599.48">because you start with windows is your home they have they their marketing departments brilliant</r>
<r t="2607.43">and i say that in a very negative derogatory way</r>
<r t="2612.79">that's sarcasm</r>
<r t="2614.45">but you can't really see the sarcasm sorry</r>
<r t="2618.35">so what we figured it was time for tax oregon you have their rightful choice</r>
<r t="2624.33">on the keyboard so we had a batch of keyboards manufactured just for us it's</r>
<r t="2629.44">not a sticker but if you don't have if you do have</r>
<r t="2636.84">we could probably going down</r>
<r t="2638.51">later we normally have this the stickers that we give away with talks on and</r>
<r t="2642.27">we need to have word hopefully and the process of getting some with the guinea</r>
<r t="2646.44">one also one if even a foot</r>
<r t="2651.78">and that's a let me ask some questions</r>
<r t="2654.22">so</r>
<r t="2655.91">do any you know with the first programmers were</r>
<r t="2659.66">okay give me one main reason and if you know i saw you what</r>
<r t="2664.74">okay actually i need to ask a more specific question sorry and make any at</r>
<r t="2668.69">it up there so nickname one of the media programmers</r>
<r t="2674.59">no</r>
<r t="2676.28">now she was</r>
<r t="2679.19">she work for the group that was</r>
<r t="2682.59">the what was founded by one of the union developers but she</r>
<r t="2688.24">look at look on weekly you can in finding at gonna ricky page</r>
<r t="2692.53">but anyway go ahead anybody else this is awesome okay so what happen one also</r>
<r t="2697.43">that's actually horrible that's sarcasm again</r>
<r t="2699.98">so what happened was when the news articles came out about the any i</r>
<r t="2705.62">ages ago they thought that's</r>
<r t="2709.82">these women in the picture were be otherwise they thought they were showcasing this beautiful</r>
<r t="2714.37">hardware they didn't understand they were actually the one plug in that is the and</r>
<r t="2719.71">following the specification code but the engineers and written for them</r>
<r t="2724">anybody feel free to look it up</r>
<r t="2728.82">in any of you name any of the originally any i coders</r>
<r t="2735.14">i guess and save true okay now i have to the fast researcher</r>
<r t="2741.5">sure</r>
<r t="2743.97">anybody</r>
<r t="2748.06">if you just we key any occupied whatever</r>
<r t="2751.67">so</r>
<r t="2754.3">okay so striking that it and it on their cell phones</r>
<r t="2761.2">so these are for women that are a mini they didn't go out there and</r>
<r t="2768.06">get the they were amazing women we heard one of them is name i will</r>
<r t="2773">say</r>
<r t="2773.87">speak and she was brilliant she's now in her eighties</r>
<r t="2778.75">i think</r>
<r t="2780.22">what</r>
<r t="2781.85">just like</r>
<r t="2786.7">i remembered i roll doubles her name i know i'm forced is not one and</r>
<r t="2792.04">she was not one of these for what is one like this is not other</r>
<r t="2795.57">that are when we do a that's program</r>
<r t="2798.5">why</r>
<r t="2799.91">it's not there okay so maybe there is i'm just using any and we keep</r>
<r t="2804.11">age and just this is the how dishes with this question before i pass question</r>
<r t="2808.12">all over the world and so what i usually say is a this picture of</r>
<r t="2811.61">these for women</r>
<r t="2814.27">one you mean one name any names</r>
<r t="2818.05">yes you have</r>
<r t="2821.45">G also</r>
<r t="2825.6">okay so gym or i think i now there's a story about gym or take</r>
<r t="2832.96">if you ever go to silicon valley schedule your visit during that time with the</r>
<r t="2837.51">computer history museum has one of their events where they have a speaker come and</r>
<r t="2843.63">they will have people like timber take who's still alive how man and give a</r>
<r t="2847.69">talk or rubber half one of the guys invented ethernet cable and they are whole</r>
<r t="2853.28">areas because from their perspective they've seen things happen that i can only dream up</r>
<r t="2858.61">one of gene vortex original stories is that when that the there are rich the</r>
<r t="2863.12">first call that they ever programmed was actually i have the speaker a question what</r>
<r t="2867.59">was the original what was the first bit of code now you can guess on</r>
<r t="2871.06">this one because i don't think it's an indian article but i think about it</r>
<r t="2874.84">this is in us</r>
<r t="2876.58">what we program yes right here</r>
<r t="2880.76">yes</r>
<r t="2884.72">thank you</r>
<r t="2888.81">and i can ask you the other three names but they are actually is too</r>
<r t="2893.66">little</r>
<r t="2895.15">so i know no okay macaulay and betty over whole burden excuse me but i've</r>
<r t="2900.44">only heard you marked speak she said and as a as a coder you would</r>
<r t="2903.72">understand is she said that they had back in the these years they didn't do</r>
<r t="2909.09">all lighters or multiple lighters like i'm sure some of you know my husband was</r>
<r t="2912.93">in the game industry for years and my goodness</r>
<r t="2916.2">they worked very late like seven P M nine P M</r>
<r t="2922.74">but they were so nervous "'cause" the next day they were presenting it to the</r>
<r t="2925.77">government officials who funded their research and she said they programmed and everything calculated correctly</r>
<r t="2931.83">except one at all but</r>
<r t="2934.28">when the missile hit the ground going</r>
<r t="2938.28">i</r>
<r t="2939.44">i thought that was cute</r>
<r t="2941.45">why</r>
<r t="2943.2">they built what the missiles to keep on going back then that wasn't really the</r>
<r t="2947.53">goal</r>
<r t="2949.12">i</r>
<r t="2966.34">how big do you have to be before you think you are in a position</r>
<r t="2969.13">where you can demand that you are given a free violence by the manufacturers like</r>
<r t="2974.37">an open source</r>
<r t="2976.1">a first before</r>
<r t="2978.41">influenced by it</r>
<r t="2982.56">i don't know</r>
<r t="2986.36">i well</r>
<r t="2988.95">it's in the hundreds of thousands so you know schools able to</r>
<r t="2993.51">but together corbett for the problem book and</r>
<r t="2997.53">that's about it there's so many steps between the chip manufacturers and the motherboard manufacturers</r>
<r t="3007.34">and the case</r>
<r t="3008.72">builders</r>
<r t="3009.87">that</r>
<r t="3011.21">getting all the way through the chain</r>
<r t="3014.39">is a really difficult ask you look at like</r>
<r t="3018.87">motorola that's been bought by google</r>
<r t="3022.05">the new</r>
<r t="3023.67">motto X phone is not able to have the latest and right on it because</r>
<r t="3029.42">it takes it another part of google now</r>
<r t="3034">just kidding</r>
<r t="3036.28">status and</r>
<r t="3038.34">definitions for the low level hardware</r>
<r t="3041.17">takes a lot of time</r>
<r t="3047.99">no</r>
<r t="3049.55">where you know it's very possible</r>
<r t="3054.28">i know this is gonna be a new field and just had a talk with</r>
<r t="3058.11">richard using amazing version about it but have you looked into sort of opening up</r>
<r t="3062.39">your hardware i know it's like there's lot of parts of the modern computer but</r>
<r t="3065.56">it would like say leasing design specifications for your cases or things like that</r>
<r t="3072.64">go back and the manufacturers down give them to us</r>
<r t="3077.66">it and it does not follow copyright</r>
<r t="3080.11">and that got really i email from okay so we didn't we want to have</r>
<r t="3085.47">like we have another one that were going to be launching really see a hopefully</r>
<r t="3091.93">days weeks some like that but we have guidelines and</r>
<r t="3096.83">but the when we order from them quite often they wanna ship they're so they</r>
<r t="3101.41">want to include windows they want to get a test is a bonus because that's</r>
<r t="3105.7">cool and that extra so or with a nine and please do not include windows</r>
<r t="3109.38">we don't wanna we know we're not paying extra for it and we haven't seen</r>
<r t="3112.88">often a just and durable at that please take windows or you can have windows</r>
<r t="3117.91">it's a free software</r>
<r t="3121.65">so it's just different that's a different world that now that they don't answer that</r>
<r t="3126.78">we do with that</r>
<r t="3128.32">okay</r>
<r t="3129.15">sorry</r>
<r t="3130.3">so are you accepting put coins</r>
<r t="3139.31">we support of a hundred percent we can tell you horror stories about works in</r>
<r t="3143.76">the merchant processing system but that's all other top i want you guys so to</r>
<r t="3150.46">use you have been working on the lower levels so it's you know do you</r>
<r t="3156.27">do you use idea</r>
<r t="3158.46">but to will mostly bit with your remote you directors do use realistic in most</r>
<r t="3165.67">of them are still to these before you leave is rickles to people</r>
<r t="3170.97">but to what can we do to so you sliver</r>
<r t="3175.61">i totally don't understand that we can say that clever</r>
<r t="3180.01">it's very well i totally thought in the startup and i have no idea and</r>
<r t="3184.32">idea but the picture in the slide presentation of the guy i think that's kind</r>
<r t="3188.28">of how i pictured what he went through i don't know that i don't know</r>
<r t="3192.3">but it was a very difficult situation</r>
<r t="3195.02">it is a very difficult it what you know the whole look right</r>
<r t="3200.23">see that's another reason why we have to keep the lock in the key separate</r>
<r t="3206.25">if there and that's other is what we don't read the news is we have</r>
<r t="3209.45">to stay healthy we have to stay</r>
<r t="3212.62">viable</r>
<r t="3215.38">and so if a distraught wants to fail let them fail we cry for that</r>
<r t="3220.74">we cry for them for a day and then we get back to building will</r>
<r t="3223.94">heart that god only</r>
<r t="3227.29">so of got long a use for you want three use is not that's two</r>
<r t="3232.29">homes not gonna be building induced room that's okay you can you can be building</r>
<r t="3236.49">miller's</r>
<r t="3240.26">i</r>
<r t="3245.56">good</r>
<r t="3247.33">thank you</r>
<r t="3253.74">what can we do to opening that's resonating we can we do to hope you</r>
<r t="3259.38">what your again</r>
<r t="3261.08">so</r>
<r t="3263.93">the also more specific i'm sure</r>
<r t="3269.47">it</r>
<r t="3271.39">we support you guys are so what we need to do like with stress well</r>
<r t="3274.87">i'll give me that as an example</r>
<r t="3276.53">they can just and they said you know i know you guys are aiming for</r>
<r t="3279.49">free an open there are so many proprietary blobs and the stuff your shipping that's</r>
<r t="3283.41">like we now we know we're doing our best were doing what we can but</r>
<r t="3286.42">we have all the options either build with what's out there were not build it</r>
<r t="3290.22">all and so that's the only choice</r>
<r t="3292.76">and so what they did is they worked on the got good enough we shipped</r>
<r t="3296.02">it out to perform really well on the field and what i'm that the thing</r>
<r t="3299.48">that both my husband are trying to communicate today is and i don't think i</r>
<r t="3303.67">have is the value of the code base you already have in place the puzzle</r>
<r t="3309.3">pieces are there you guys have any idea how amazing it is to ship a</r>
<r t="3315.23">computer to somebody who has never use linux</r>
<r t="3319.11">doesn't know the difference between windows and a map</r>
<r t="3322.99">we had so back it was when we first started in two thousand seven i</r>
<r t="3326.93">was like you know okay we're shipping to</r>
<r t="3329.67">developers and i love these guys and women and guys when whatever and i this</r>
<r t="3335.03">is fantastic but when we gonna ship to people who don't really who are technically</r>
<r t="3339.7">inclined</r>
<r t="3340.94">so i said someday i'm gonna here of a tech support call it indicates that</r>
<r t="3345.56">worshipping to middle america are worshipping to people you don't know what they're doing and</r>
<r t="3349.62">one day i was sitting to two desks away from the tech support person</r>
<r t="3353.97">and i heard and say</r>
<r t="3355.7">well have you tried turning it on</r>
<r t="3360.33">so you know that by</r>
<r t="3362.99">i</r>
<r t="3364.7">and two thousand nine</r>
<r t="3367.14">guide</r>
<r t="3368.89">well i wanted to say that when you do you do your own or else</r>
<r t="3372.6">and</r>
<r t="3374.81">we is a hardware manufacturer want to include the you know we'd like to support</r>
<r t="3378.89">secure but we don't want microsoft to you some our systems</r>
<r t="3382.75">so when you do your own</r>
<r t="3385.14">secure signing without microsoft he's and will support</r>
<r t="3390.48">your work he's been or you your for it's not that big a deal it</r>
<r t="3395.48">really isn't</r>
<r t="3398.43">it takes effort it takes a bit attraction</r>
<r t="3402.72">we support you guys are be</r>
<r t="3404.66">for years i've been wanting to have a different evolved bistro</r>
<r t="3409.57">so</r>
<r t="3413.21">and are there any other questions</r>
<r t="3422.31">i think everybody's done are like my goddess and this how much more</r>
<r t="3427.22">a lot of other places the pieces so just to clarify you're opposed to secure</r>
<r t="3433.05">restricted we would even with things like matthew good shimmer the linux boot loader based</r>
<r t="3438.59">on ideological differences with microsoft holding the keys and only guess so yes we are</r>
<r t="3444.86">we are opposed to a proprietary corporation whose only goal is building is isn't building</r>
<r t="3450.63">better profit margins holding the key a gateway is everything</r>
<r t="3456.23">it everything</r>
<r t="3459.51">do plan for authenticating drivers which you know all of the hardware vendors are using</r>
<r t="3464.34">microsoft ski to sign if you're not gonna of microsoft a quick</r>
<r t="3471.95">not sure all</r>
<r t="3474.44">right now as well as we're building with the distress you have signed</r>
<r t="3480.09">or</r>
<r t="3486.06">right</r>
<r t="3492.3">no much remember that we can have i think you're very</r>
<r t="3497.51">you we have by is good</r>
<r t="3501.54">that is the part that makes all video cards would like video cards and all</r>
<r t="3507.45">the driver modules</r>
<r t="3509.74">you</r>
<r t="3511.06">i don't know i have and i don't what</r>
<r t="3514.94">you're on the question</r>
<r t="3533.4">and that's a room for the volume level would like to see those drivers sign</r>
<r t="3537.31">with the but don't see that's not the whole gentleman softly</r>
<r t="3542.69">but you can sell open source drivers</r>
<r t="3545.94">open source drivers</r>
<r t="3550.03">sorry</r>
<r t="3552.78">my laptop doesn't have any proprietary drivers there's a lot of flexibility liam level</r>
<r t="3559.67">at the driver level</r>
<r t="3567.98">this is the type of thing we might need to open up</r>
<r t="3571.8">and environment where we can chat about it</r>
<r t="3575.33">"'cause" i can tell right now there's three people or at least two people who</r>
<r t="3578.17">are gonna do major research as soon as they get internet connection</r>
<r t="3584.08">go ahead of their of their</r>
<r t="3596.25">and where you what you want and ship hardware with open firmware opened drivers or</r>
<r t="3601.75">anything like that now the way weren't growing is</r>
<r t="3605.76">small lights clean and local shops there usually were applicable there actually kind of set</r>
<r t="3610.27">up like a franchise business model "'cause" the shops themselves</r>
<r t="3614.96">are about some distribution and supply chain and there's a good reason why there aren't</r>
<r t="3620.74">any other hardware manufacturers who are competing but that's</r>
<r t="3624.61">it's hard a there's no profit margin there are a lot of people you don't</r>
<r t="3628.66">want to do and if money is in your motive then you can do it</r>
<r t="3631.52">but if it is then so what we're doing is i would love to have</r>
<r t="3635.33">a hundred of "'em" worldwide right now in all the major cities</r>
<r t="3638.46">if we had investors we would</r>
<r t="3640.41">i've had investors propose doing to run the million it's not</r>
<r t="3644.44">they're the barriers are</r>
<r t="3646.9">surmount able and if i found an investor who</r>
<r t="3650.84">was ethical i would</r>
<r t="3653.77">i can tell you horror stories right</r>
<r t="3656.27">question so what board</r>
<r t="3659.82">thousands</r>
<r t="3666.9">it depends our new zealand shop is at it depends on orders to sometimes we</r>
<r t="3672.07">have a large amount borders sometimes it's down like right before anything to release probably</r>
<r t="3676.55">should use remotes try it example where the millions</r>
<r t="3680.14">i'm not shed and aggressor</r>
<r t="3684.95">sorry so anybody or not to advertising about a lot of people here actually here</r>
<r t="3693.38">and maybe a little bit of a harsh question so what what's the fundamental difference</r>
<r t="3697.59">between you buying laptops from chinese manufacturers want to send you windows with them and</r>
<r t="3702.73">then installing linux on them and me by laptop from a chinese manufacturers want to</r>
<r t="3707.2">be when you can literally that tomorrow it's one way to do it through the</r>
<r t="3711.32">know was web store all the time right i mean what's difference between these two</r>
<r t="3714.44">things a difference is that the differences about that dilated after you can do yourself</r>
<r t="3720.78">i talked a lot if you can do yourself and you can spend a lot</r>
<r t="3723.76">of time and a lot of money figuring out it's becoming more difficult i don't</r>
<r t="3727.08">know if i just sit intelligent machines and to get hard right</r>
<r t="3732.34">or late eighties as you can just go to best buy or antispeaker or stars</r>
<r t="3736.03">of questioning well it just you know i go to learn over dot com of</r>
<r t="3739.94">iowa which means that it but when it's on a</r>
<r t="3745.23">okay</r>
<r t="3747.34">so how it so we stick to different from what you're doing from a point</r>
<r t="3751.81">of you know write a different here is yes that's a very good question so</r>
<r t="3755.48">thanks for asking a if you are a developer type and you can get over</r>
<r t="3759.43">any potential problems fantastic as far as i know though what does learn it doesn't</r>
<r t="3763.72">know about ship it with windows installed or</r>
<r t="3766.72">okay can you order it with your favourite bistro</r>
<r t="3772.15">okay can anybody</r>
<r t="3775.55">like where "'cause" i'd love to know</r>
<r t="3781.14">i have to look into that "'cause" as far as i would be thrilled if</r>
<r t="3783.91">they were not wanna support that and promote it if they were</r>
<r t="3788.26">but as far as i know nobody's doing and the reason why is because you</r>
<r t="3792.21">get pressure from microsoft</r>
<r t="3801.05">okay good</r>
<r t="3803.25">okay now the reason the reason the main reason at the main part of all</r>
<r t="3808.05">sorry go ahead of it the people than here</r>
<r t="3820.26">okay so into the microphone</r>
<r t="3824.49">but also the point you will you will actually should i want to or see</r>
<r t="3832.54">running free builds and usually don't pay extra for it</r>
<r t="3837.47">now the reason i love this question because it is very true and very accurate</r>
<r t="3842.57">yes if you were developer you can</r>
<r t="3845.95">you can find ways around it you always find ways around it we will always</r>
<r t="3850.14">find ways around it unfortunately it's on a one person level in a world that</r>
<r t="3854.88">has billions and billions of people</r>
<r t="3857.9">so what happens and i didn't have it in this presentation but i have it</r>
<r t="3861.86">in others</r>
<r t="3863.01">is that i assume they your building that your coding it not just for tomorrow</r>
<r t="3869.17">or next year or the year after i as you know that in your quieter</r>
<r t="3874">moments when you're thinking about your life in general you want some of your code</r>
<r t="3877.74">to be a legacy for who you are and what you contributed you want your</r>
<r t="3882.55">kids or grandkids to actually know what can is in general public speech rather than</r>
<r t="3888.61">reading about in history but</r>
<r t="3891.4">we're building legacy here</r>
<r t="3893.91">and well developers configured out yes that's fantastic we always will be able to figure</r>
<r t="3897.49">it out we need to make</r>
<r t="3900.32">the hardware accessible to the public at large and i have never met a regular</r>
<r t="3905.21">release in america i've never met a regular person he's probably well</r>
<r t="3909.49">they by doubles and apple they</r>
<r t="3914.04">they wanna they wanna simple easy entry point they don't wanna options</r>
<r t="3917.32">so we're trying to reach</r>
<r t="3919.51">the public at large</r>
<r t="3921.06">so i hear your point there's a question okay</r>
<r t="3925.52">sorry not really</r>
<r t="3927.47">but legacy</r>
<r t="3929.21">okay</r>
<r t="3932.61">you had a</r>
<r t="3934.93">not so thinly veiled criticism of capitalism and be american corporation a i said that</r>
<r t="3941.42">i got it what are your ideas are like just overall general theory about how</r>
<r t="3949.87">you compete and are successful against these entities without playing into the game so much</r>
<r t="3955.96">in a with our old really where money and numbers matter so much as of</r>
<r t="3960.76">right now is structures so that we don't have to</r>
<r t="3962.95">we don't like that</r>
<r t="3965.59">but in you do compete when someone's looked by computer but that on their side</r>
<r t="3970.27">if that the competition does enter are doors we can i think it's really easy</r>
<r t="3975.8">to look is just as a fixing compared to them</r>
<r t="3979.24">but we now we can it's a distraction</r>
<r t="3983.55">i don't know if i mean to capitalism i don't know i'm working as hard</r>
<r t="3986.27">as anybody else but i don't</r>
<r t="3989">i just all i know is that the foundation i want to be able to</r>
<r t="3992.47">open up my machine i wanna be able the white lot what i want i</r>
<r t="3995.5">don't wanna i that's just i'm just talking about from a very personal level</r>
<r t="4001.47">and how we how we figure out how to shape a dist row</r>
<r t="4006.47">that doesn't have microsoft is the gatekeeper i mean we can</r>
<r t="4012.54">that still come out of philosophical level</r>
<r t="4017.03">although the keys to solve a girl there okay that S okay before you go</r>
<r t="4022.51">please grab a screwdriver we have plenty and we have a bunch of all stickers</r>
<r t="4026.01">are not stickers we have ribbon to sorry and</r>
<r t="4030.96">so i am i can has i'm too tired at a tax</r>
<r t="4035.18">we hope to have the good new</r>
<r t="4039.45">et cetera later or what</r>
<r t="4041.62">you just much thank you</r>
