<r t="10.85">okay so let's get started with they talk so you all talk about the average</r>
<r t="15.51">problem for women's that we have</r>
<r t="17.84">you gonna in don't really since two thousand and six and i got involved was</r>
<r t="21.72">it in two thousand and nine O we can introduce or no okay</r>
<r t="28.4">this is for questions later okay and also you know we were able to apply</r>
<r t="36.07">a lot of the lessons that we learned a certain entries problem for women are</r>
<r t="40.67">to run in our outreach program and google summer of code in general</r>
<r t="45.75">so first like non joint google summer of code in two thousand and five which</r>
<r t="52.19">was the first years it was doing a google summer put in a i believe</r>
<r t="56.41">most people here know really well global summer codas but for those who don't it's</r>
<r t="61.97">a problem where a google bayes students five thousand dollars for three months of some</r>
<r t="70.39">of work a on a different free software projects and over two hundred and fifty</r>
<r t="75.9">different free such organisations participating and don't has been fortunate to be participating every year</r>
<r t="82.51">since two thousand and five so you know there were no women applicants and then</r>
<r t="87">in a two thousand six hunter will can principle know what is that like among</r>
<r t="92.33">hundred eighty applications that norm received for global summer of code you know twenty people</r>
<r t="98.32">was selected that your but one hundred an eighties there were no women applicants so</r>
<r t="103.06">they decided is that they could do something about it and</r>
<r t="107.72">they</r>
<r t="109.24">started the first of the know women some our outreach program and a it was</r>
<r t="114.26">like really trailblazer because that's when they had to field a lot of the scepticism</r>
<r t="118.52">in a community where people said you know well if women are not shown opposite</r>
<r t="122.87">they might just not be interested and that's how it is and they had the</r>
<r t="128.56">received about a hundred applications and that really prove that women are in fact interested</r>
<r t="133.92">in a six women participated was known for a two months intercept that was like</r>
<r t="139.5">put together</r>
<r t="140.96">just the same here right after the google summer of code that line</r>
<r t="147.21">and</r>
<r t="149.23">i think the hope was that just kind of</r>
<r t="153.06">saying that once that we are communities that is friendly to women would encourage women</r>
<r t="159.97">to apply for google summer of code in future years but as you can see</r>
<r t="164.16">you know the numbers improved slightly but we were like getting like this kind of</r>
<r t="168.09">binary code one zero one zero like you know that's a you know maybe there</r>
<r t="172.8">was one woman in a particular year</r>
<r t="177.71">and also so that was like around the time when i started being involved was</r>
<r t="182.85">can all it and what it can just of the nine which was my a</r>
<r t="187.27">and second what can grant can area so for five percent women am i think</r>
<r t="192.16">is in that actually meant each women and the funny thing is that like when</r>
<r t="196.79">i like started looking into this i started by saying well zora for women and</r>
<r t="201.52">that picture but later and the raffle women in the picture but later more women</r>
<r t="206.89">like karen sensor or some on her hers wire were like our that sylvia was</r>
<r t="213.86">there so more women are keen to me and like i kind of learned that</r>
<r t="219.18">like you know they words there to a so this is number you know but</r>
<r t="223.66">maybe is a one more like i also kind of like hundred sixty people in</r>
<r t="226.54">the don't picture i don't know exactly how many people to work but it was</r>
<r t="230.6">about five percent that were eight women at the conference</r>
<r t="233.89">and</r>
<r t="236.36">the gonna condition like really noticed that and they approached me ask me to organised</r>
<r t="243.86">the outreach problem for women to revive the previous efforts that we had so i</r>
<r t="250.31">was like really new to this type of</r>
<r t="253.94">activity because i was a software engineer and you know i just didn't want to</r>
<r t="258.91">really</r>
<r t="260.4">focus my attention on that before i was asked and then like when i start</r>
<r t="265.74">thinking about it and when i started going to other are free software</r>
<r t="270.94">what women participation tracks like i want to a women participation and all that post</r>
<r t="276.23">that present high nowhere on and you know i was just basically little learning from</r>
<r t="283.12">that</r>
<r t="284.18">that you know we should be doing something about it and</r>
<r t="289.78">and basically a the first thing i started doing it encouraged women to apply for</r>
<r t="296.49">google some of but so we created an average pro for women and but i</r>
<r t="300.14">also said that okay like we should make it an ongoing initiative</r>
<r t="306.48">but we started by encouraging women to bifocals summer of code and in two thousand</r>
<r t="310.93">ten a that you're like we already had like mentors for that which problem for</r>
<r t="314.44">women and we kind of did a round of introductions and they don't women list</r>
<r t="320.14">and</r>
<r t="322.76">you know also in the end like that were six applicants this year for google</r>
<r t="326.27">summer of code and all only one participated two so again like not a very</r>
<r t="331.13">high turnout so this is like when we realised we need to go back to</r>
<r t="336">do in the dedicated internships</r>
<r t="338.65">and this is how you noses poster came about and we went back to doing</r>
<r t="345.2">dedicated internships</r>
<r t="350.17">and we are aware doing them twice a year</r>
<r t="355.52">and we had eight to twelve participants each round and also we decided to run</r>
<r t="361.8">some around in parallel with google a summer of code as that a lot of</r>
<r t="366.3">to you notice</r>
<r t="368.08">in white women to apply for both programs and women code reason more students they</r>
<r t="374.08">where able to participate in google summer of code and that would really</r>
<r t="380.02">kicked up the number of women that we have in will summer of code</r>
<r t="387.29">and also you know we have more women in a community now and last it</r>
<r t="392.12">was seventeen percent women at the project and this year it's</r>
<r t="396.76">eighteen percent and this year will also like we soon as a milestone which is</r>
<r t="401.87">with triple the number of speakers a whole women at what it as a percentage</r>
<r t="406.49">so we have twenty one percent women speakers of what to basically more women are</r>
<r t="412.67">you know stepping up in our community and that's wonderful and</r>
<r t="416.64">you know the program seem to work and i'm gonna talk more about</r>
<r t="420.16">why was tickets working</r>
<r t="425.6">so well we're doing this in brno it really does like had of other</r>
<r t="431.58">free software project still like last year can really did this study of newcomers who've</r>
<r t="436.88">joints twelve free several projects in the last three years</r>
<r t="441.71">and for the norm fifty percent of respondents were women and for other project six</r>
<r t="446.12">percent of respondents where women and like this is your to fifteen basics highest concentration</r>
<r t="452.45">was stuff like an but still and we can be idea which was fifteen percent</r>
<r t="458.02">that actually meant like to women replied from bikini D and three women replied from</r>
<r t="462.95">a still and in fact like we had don't have more women responded and all</r>
<r t="468.33">of the project combined</r>
<r t="471.12">so people in the wider free software community of course nobody stand that disparity in</r>
<r t="478.67">women</r>
<r t="480.45">we're representation in the project and there is a lot of interest on the on</r>
<r t="485.01">behalf of like all those projects to do something about it and since we already</r>
<r t="491.14">had i'd say when in formula up we started inviting as organisations to join us</r>
<r t="499.17">and last summer free separate conservancy was a twisted project joined us you know kind</r>
<r t="506.52">of like stealing from want to which you know is people in computer science that</r>
<r t="511.45">was like the hardest pro problem and then you know in the winter and then</r>
<r t="516.32">this number of skilled from to too many and</r>
<r t="521.65">and that's you can see the a good all martial artist girl is gonna poster</r>
<r t="527.71">and now we have more of</r>
<r t="531.65">free software robots</r>
<r t="533.78">and the world</r>
<r t="535.91">as a logo</r>
<r t="540.14">so this is this is the information about how much the program has grown a</r>
<r t="545.42">right now we have us thirty seven in terms participating was sixteen organisations and that</r>
<r t="551.24">includes we comedian was the lot and you know not include linux kernel</r>
<r t="556.85">open a morass lots of great projects</r>
<r t="560.04">and you know at the same time like i mean the climate is changing the</r>
<r t="565.04">culture's changing and in google summer of code goes we'll team and</r>
<r t="573.65">i and the either initiative after that it be need to in course more women</r>
<r t="579.2">to participate in free software are also be reflected in the fact that</r>
<r t="584.84">just years there's a nine point five percent of google somehow of code participants the</r>
<r t="590.07">women and like that number has been climbing from really low numbers in</r>
<r t="596.97">earlier years and like another example that i have is that a bikini dear has</r>
<r t="602.55">only ever had like one woman participative will summer of code before and because the</r>
<r t="607.82">work which is to be in a in the access problem for women</r>
<r t="611.45">this year as a summer they have seven out of about twenty of their google</r>
<r t="617.5">summer of course participants this year are women so the can experience it can own</r>
<r t="622.43">had with also increase in the number of women for just being able last summer</r>
<r t="627.72">of code is like was basically replicated by a bikini D a</r>
<r t="634.83">and accurately sponsors of the surround a longer than google are a really big general</r>
<r t="642.09">sponsors and then mostly other musicians our sponsor in internships where people are contributing each</r>
<r t="649.74">choose their initiation specifically</r>
<r t="652.59">but yes of really just you know we're learning where working together with a lot</r>
<r t="658.02">of great projects to advance women's participation in free software</r>
<r t="663.86">and right had</r>
<r t="665.86">if a having mean workmen's this which is great and ropes and great our we</r>
<r t="672.18">go park with helped us dropped the contracts for everybody which is something we decided</r>
<r t="677.55">to introduce this year as the program group</r>
<r t="683.01">and so why it works first like when</r>
<r t="689.32">when</r>
<r t="691">people are applying i mean first things that we do is we address women directly</r>
<r t="695.38">because this just seems to grab their attention to let them know that a like</r>
<r t="701.06">that would thing might single unlike what they've observed around them this is something that</r>
<r t="708.09">is really open to them and something that is welcome enforce them and we can</r>
<r t="714.41">that woman was mentors which ensures that like to have a one on one attention</r>
<r t="719.28">do an application process and we really</r>
<r t="723.56">emphasise the application process what we want to see a house killed somebody is the</r>
<r t="730.73">and also you know how much they're willing to learn</r>
<r t="734.08">so we require a contribution during the application process for the application to be considered</r>
<r t="740.81">because</r>
<r t="743.15">i think is just like also really important to us that the people we bring</r>
<r t="749.24">and</r>
<r t="750.62">are qualified and you know both them and a and the community have a good</r>
<r t="757.41">experience and also we ask people to spread the word far and wide interest from</r>
<r t="763.35">marketing perspective making a sample tweet an example e-mail available for people you know helps</r>
<r t="771.96">some spread the word for you</r>
<r t="776.32">and then</r>
<r t="777.46">during their internship</r>
<r t="779.42">the reason</r>
<r t="782.93">they need to be</r>
<r t="784.67">they three months internships is because you know women often feel</r>
<r t="791.1">quite behind when us a feast was technology where</r>
<r t="796.36">kind of the after that you know if you guys we're born with the laptop</r>
<r t="799.83">attached to them and women where so providing that focused opportunity to work and something</r>
<r t="809.65">for three months to really developed experience</r>
<r t="812.52">to basically catch up is essential for to jumpstart</r>
<r t="817.98">a women's participation free software</r>
<r t="821.48">and also we depart somewhat from like what's been typical for google summer school would</r>
<r t="827.84">like google summer of code messages this originally was like prove your rock star propose</r>
<r t="833.35">the project</r>
<r t="835.2">in you know put like put you idea into reality and you know we actually</r>
<r t="840.2">learned that doesn't quite work for global summer of code either so we kind of</r>
<r t="844.25">changed approach to it as well so we're really try to emphasise a project that</r>
<r t="850.07">unmanageable that allow participants like interns to land a tasks throughout the internship period kinda</r>
<r t="858.9">happens beautification of lending something</r>
<r t="862.32">and also definitely they have to be like agreed upon a basic community and</r>
<r t="867.96">also relevant so you kinda have to accept at the project plan might change throughout</r>
<r t="874.34">a so basically we define the actual for women insertions as more of a fellowship</r>
<r t="881.27">which is more free flowing and</r>
<r t="883.94">we apply that to will some of go to the extent that that's possible was</r>
<r t="889.41">in the google summer of code framework</r>
<r t="891.94">and another very important things that we're doing was interested but that we're requiring participants</r>
<r t="897.64">to block every are two weeks</r>
<r t="901.12">and first that increases the visibility of their work and second it let the community</r>
<r t="906.49">know that women are participating make women a part of the community and i think</r>
<r t="911.71">that</r>
<r t="912.64">in brno we had a</r>
<r t="915.09">of various moves</r>
<r t="917.15">transition to have an a discourse</r>
<r t="921.61">in the project that just gradually changed to be more a polite and to be</r>
<r t="928">aware of the fact that women are part of the conversation like we're really never</r>
<r t="932.1">had to like</r>
<r t="933.99">force that issue and say like let's just like</r>
<r t="937.3">drop all the corny jokes how but people became more sensitive overtime because women's voices</r>
<r t="944.07">are visible in the community and you know you can contrast that for example with</r>
<r t="949.54">like linux kernel which right now is have an like rampant discussions</r>
<r t="954.09">about what is the appropriate language to be used on mailing</r>
<r t="960.18">and i think that we're doing is the team</r>
<r t="963.33">internships are</r>
<r t="965.5">open to</r>
<r t="967.42">balls non coders and</r>
<r t="969.67">i believe that was in the previous slide</r>
<r t="971.97">yes this is the programs open to both non students and not coders which basically</r>
<r t="978.5">extensive field you know we want we definitely need to have outreach programs for designers</r>
<r t="985.71">and translators</r>
<r t="988.13">in general but at least right now we are able to do that was in</r>
<r t="991.9">the out reach program for women</r>
<r t="994.01">and nancy this is also very important because that basically allows women to transition into</r>
<r t="999.6">work in a on free software</r>
<r t="1002.61">after this students you know and free suffer is not like notably has a little</r>
<r t="1007.42">barrier to entry you don't need to have a diploma to work on free software</r>
<r t="1012.69">so you know people from different walks of life can joint free suffering to join</r>
<r t="1019.58">with the help of the outreach program for women</r>
<r t="1026.06">and the couple of the points and this slide is that you know well</r>
<r t="1030.83">some like a woman might still be like the only woman in the project that</r>
<r t="1035.48">she's working on we have this community of interns where they can talk to each</r>
<r t="1040.12">other and kinda network and i have the support network of women who participate in</r>
<r t="1047.12">and of both men and women who are mentors in the program and you know</r>
<r t="1051.7">face to face communication like we're having here quite because very important and</r>
<r t="1058.21">you know that's what gets people addicted so we try to bring everybody to the</r>
<r t="1063.82">events and encourage other organisations to do the things in fact this front would be</r>
<r t="1071.37">introduced to five how hundred dollar allowance for travel affords the out from for women</r>
<r t="1079.99">insurance and that's actually some sort google some of code provides as well</r>
<r t="1084.14">for travelling to relevant events</r>
<r t="1088.3">and then</r>
<r t="1089.82">after the</r>
<r t="1093.47">program and you know we of course encourage</r>
<r t="1096.72">participants to stay involved to continue working with their mentors you nosy interaction soul but</r>
<r t="1102.77">cement are shipping teen years and i have also encouraging turns to present at conferences</r>
<r t="1107.85">and you know many step up to have very active roles in our community</r>
<r t="1114.99">and also like it's important for us as organisers to understand it's a good support</r>
<r t="1119.98">for both other from for women and google some of course to understand that</r>
<r t="1124.09">you know</r>
<r t="1126">people have their own life and like that</r>
<r t="1128.32">path like you know it's great to have like a very fast online so somebody</r>
<r t="1133.28">moved on two different community or to just do something entirely different</r>
<r t="1139.75">haven't been able to share of values was them and the values of free suffering</r>
<r t="1145.11">and knowing that more people understand it and can carries that message is also very</r>
<r t="1150.31">important</r>
<r t="1151.54">so that in itself is tremendous value and privilege of</r>
<r t="1157.9">have an you know being able to have those internships and providing those internship opportunities</r>
<r t="1167.1">and you know you might have seen some of those flights in my talk at</r>
<r t="1172.33">the A G M yesterday but here are some examples of how the alumnis of</r>
<r t="1178.73">the program are starting initiatives that in there</r>
<r t="1182.86">local</r>
<r t="1185.28">areas and also going off to conferences talking about the program</r>
<r t="1195.05">so now like to switch to like what did we learn and like how did</r>
<r t="1200.17">we applied to make known better for everybody</r>
<r t="1204.84">so one of my favourite</r>
<r t="1208.52">things that came out of this is that i don't know has a mentors list</r>
<r t="1212.73">that you know basically mentors for everybody in like i think the informal mentor ship</r>
<r t="1218.13">is just so important just like haven't this human touch like i'm just like remember</r>
<r t="1223.05">in like five years like i don't for this word a five yourself look at</r>
<r t="1226.25">this like a slide of like a hand with this smiley face and it's not</r>
<r t="1231.85">human touch and i think this is just so important at this is this is</r>
<r t="1236.41">you know people who can give you a hand right and going on now like</r>
<r t="1240.43">it started was like nine mentors for the actors problem for women people interested in</r>
<r t="1246.45">outreach problem for women and then we've just moved just list over just a than</r>
<r t="1250.08">a lot of initiative and right now has forty six mentors and i'd really cars</r>
<r t="1254.89">people to add themselves to it</r>
<r t="1259.31">and</r>
<r t="1260.87">along with that like of course we've been improving resources for everybody us in particular</r>
<r t="1265.96">with created and you commerce tutorial a step by step tutorial to take somebody through</r>
<r t="1271.15">the process of downloading in brno module submitting a bug for com submitted fix for</r>
<r t="1276.66">it cools in a bog so just really something that helps people get started and</r>
<r t="1282.78">about forty people have gone through system the last and months and then actually alters</r>
<r t="1289.03">from for women participants have worked on developer tutorials in multiple languages like ball and</r>
<r t="1295.36">javascript and see and pies and so we know have improve developer tutorials and along</r>
<r t="1303.23">was those we have you know other</r>
<r t="1306.92">initiatives that i'm not directly related to search for women but that are part of</r>
<r t="1311.64">our you know what we do to make</r>
<r t="1315.63">you know newcomers haven't immediately finding a their way starting with can also it's a</r>
<r t="1322.01">you know the can on lot harder and the every detail matters initiative by designers</r>
<r t="1326.79">where they identify a</r>
<r t="1329.7">bugs and features that they definitely want to see fixed and implemented in brno and</r>
<r t="1335.15">those a great beginner to intermediate task</r>
<r t="1342.31">and you know ever since that we did for the ad for women which is</r>
<r t="1347.09">kind applied to google summer of code as well i said before we did not</r>
<r t="1351.88">require tool summer of code applicants to engage with the project that they were applying</r>
<r t="1357.54">to work on do an application appeared we just said you know give us the</r>
<r t="1361.97">link to some bulk you sold in free software and i</r>
<r t="1367.5">this engagement and like during the application process and</r>
<r t="1373.02">seen simple bugs some simple patches land kinda makes a detective and very encouraging and</r>
<r t="1380.8">to the students and prepare is them to start to be ready to dive in</r>
<r t="1386.6">into their project so you know is i mentioned at the aegean we had like</r>
<r t="1391.9">an exceptionally high rate of engagements was i will summer of good students</r>
<r t="1399.66">this year and</r>
<r t="1402.87">we also require everybody to block see it used to be a requirement that people</r>
<r t="1407.83">have to send their updates to me a little list and then we realise that</r>
<r t="1411.2">the meal on this is mostly just being read by other insurance and we realise</r>
<r t="1415.52">that you know it's really good to get people to just blog on the planet</r>
<r t="1419.55">and you know get the feedback from the community and you know just kind of</r>
<r t="1425.17">also feel more integrated with the community and again we have the size more manageable</r>
<r t="1431.42">agreed-upon tasks instead of like grant idea projects</r>
<r t="1438.58">and you know we do things together like for a you know which free bows</r>
<r t="1443.61">programs as our outreach program both google summer of code and outreach group for women</r>
<r t="1449.54">so for example</r>
<r t="1452.16">you know what do i i'd yearbook a post last year and this year with</r>
<r t="1456.52">old interns</r>
<r t="1460.59">your screen there</r>
<r t="1463.39">never believe very special and to see and then do have participated in both programs</r>
<r t="1471.01">and that</r>
<r t="1474.92">and you want to more for quite a few actually</r>
<r t="1479.46">and tiffany</r>
<r t="1483.6">and those the things you can do it to help like you know first just</r>
<r t="1486.99">be mentor you know put yourself out there so that you know somebody can get</r>
<r t="1492.8">your help and become as awesome as you are</r>
<r t="1497.07">and also you know think about the beginners how like how would the beginner approach</r>
<r t="1502.72">your project like have good resources for them have step by step tutorials you know</r>
<r t="1508.62">be ready to point to</r>
<r t="1512.28">easy tasks i think you know i said like we have too much of</r>
<r t="1518.43">you know kind of scratch around each at this is where we just in well</r>
<r t="1523.28">like your newcomer like you know</r>
<r t="1526.82">what do you want to work on like to have a grand vision and really</r>
<r t="1531.4">i just and that we need to do a better job in a directing newcomers</r>
<r t="1536.31">to</r>
<r t="1537.64">small tasks that are definitely something that we want those that we maximise how good</r>
<r t="1544.17">their experience of landing that first batch is how likely it is that we will</r>
<r t="1549.54">help them and that actual and because that's something that we want to see landed</r>
<r t="1554.89">so maximise in the good experience over you know prove your rock star it's i</r>
<r t="1562.12">think it's a good approach</r>
<r t="1565.72">and then a for both the opportunities that we ask people to promote when you</r>
<r t="1570.9">know we have the internships and for any opportunities that you know but in your</r>
<r t="1574.36">city you know we are now collecting you know</r>
<r t="1579.88">information about women groups in different cities and different lot calls and those two links</r>
<r t="1586.88">so</r>
<r t="1589.23">you know and both of them if you go to the outer sprung for women</r>
<r t="1591.99">spread the word you can find they are the links there as well and i</r>
<r t="1595.62">think it's just</r>
<r t="1597.83">you know and the second link is basically like women in computer science groups in</r>
<r t="1602.3">universities so if there is an advantage and you're like well women are just not</r>
<r t="1607.34">sure not they're not interested i know that's not the keys just invite them invite</r>
<r t="1611.44">them like take you know take make the extra effort to</r>
<r t="1616.31">and information about events to of women in technology list in the area it really</r>
<r t="1621.64">makes a difference</r>
<r t="1623.71">and also and i think that</r>
<r t="1626.77">we followed and like you know we're really fun this was quite it because like</r>
<r t="1630.25">you know last year we had as many women at the conference</r>
<r t="1634.06">but without us like actually encouraging women to</r>
<r t="1640.04">to as well to supply talks and do talks</r>
<r t="1645.56">i think fewer would have been doing that this year and that's something that a</r>
<r t="1649.78">conference organisers across free software have found that you know when you typically approach an</r>
<r t="1656.44">out and out some like do you have an idea for a talk at the</r>
<r t="1660.2">conference they would like brainstorm five ideas was you and when you approach you woman</r>
<r t="1665.73">she would say well i'm not and that i'm not the expert and like you</r>
<r t="1670.21">know and the ideas that like you don't have to be the expert you can</r>
<r t="1673.55">be an expert you know something talk about it and so making an extra effort</r>
<r t="1680.3">to encourage women to say yes you have things to talk about please go and</r>
<r t="1685.28">talk about it at the conference really</r>
<r t="1689.53">make sense in</r>
<r t="1691.65">promoting the visibility of women in the project</r>
<r t="1696.65">and</r>
<r t="1697.8">you know more</r>
<r t="1700.53">specifically also you know if you're the companies it's not yet sponsor not rich problem</r>
<r t="1706.36">for women a please consider getting your company to sponsor an internship</r>
<r t="1712.19">and you know if you're donating money to the confrontation you couldn't possibly here mark</r>
<r t="1717.89">damped was the a control for women were basically go and each and sponsors outreach</r>
<r t="1722.88">problem for women internships itself so you know and intonation to signal condition would help</r>
<r t="1729.64">with that</r>
<r t="1731.95">and</r>
<r t="1733.46">i also would like to talk about a couple</r>
<r t="1736.64">other initiatives that are making the free suffers base more welcoming to women because you</r>
<r t="1744.81">know we we're really need to climate change and i think what we're doing and</r>
<r t="1748.53">don't is like at a really big part of the climate change but</r>
<r t="1753.29">you know nobody can do it alone and it's great to have different decision approach</r>
<r t="1759.07">and it from different angles and i'd say that all's serene like post can open</r>
<r t="1763.27">teach an open hatch and need initiative are confronted in a question of a low</r>
<r t="1769.15">participation of women in free software from three different angles and so here just kind</r>
<r t="1775.34">of funny that like you know this looks like a chicken and then tag and</r>
<r t="1779.95">we do have the bit over chicken an ad problem we are you know few</r>
<r t="1785.41">women are participating in free software because few women are participating in free software and</r>
<r t="1791.45">they don't think that the are culture is friendly to women's participation so those two</r>
<r t="1797.21">organisations there are trying to solve this problem from two different angles open hatch is</r>
<r t="1803.02">running workshops a for students</r>
<r t="1807.59">at universities and they probably around like over a dozen workshops right now a believe</r>
<r t="1814.51">all somewhere in united states but they're they have exceptional materials online for their workshops</r>
<r t="1820.37">and write ups from sam and they usually try to organise those workshops rules the</r>
<r t="1825.15">women in computer science other groups at the university like they open to all students</r>
<r t="1829.89">but they would make this extra effort to invite women and basically those are introduction</r>
<r t="1835.72">to free software like what is free software what is tools used for free software</r>
<r t="1842.62">and help in a participants fix simple box across different projects</r>
<r t="1848.98">and</r>
<r t="1851.03">eight initiative is</r>
<r t="1853.21">approaches this from a different angle where they had taken make a really big picture</r>
<r t="1857.54">view of what do we need to do to make a culture friendlier to women</r>
<r t="1862.4">so they have a created an anti harassment policy of version of which we are</r>
<r t="1867.27">has been adopted by over a hundred free supper conferences including quite that they're creating</r>
<r t="1873.22">the running at camp of and</r>
<r t="1877.09">once or twice a year is that a bring women interested in open technology and</r>
<r t="1883.87">culture together and the last event had about two hundred</r>
<r t="1887.73">participants and also had an L extract from an a to</r>
<r t="1893.44">to help kinda</r>
<r t="1895.67">distill how many can be helpful and in</r>
<r t="1900.1">promoting discos and you know it like i've been to i to cams and it's</r>
<r t="1905.6">a fantastic of and because you see a lot of like minded people you</r>
<r t="1912.04">see a lot of people like doing things to</r>
<r t="1914.95">to change you know to change the ratio and also just doing all some stuff</r>
<r t="1921.12">in you know in their projects</r>
<r t="1925.27">so more things that you can do a to help with those organisations which would</r>
<r t="1932.11">also promote our participation of women in free software is the</r>
<r t="1936.78">create an open hatch profile so like they also have an online component where i</r>
<r t="1942.62">think norm should be better represented in the fact that we are friendly project and</r>
<r t="1947.47">as they have</r>
<r t="1949.36">you know profiles for mentors on their side that i encourage people to create and</r>
<r t="1955.75">also they have contests material so you can austin open hedge workshop and they have</r>
<r t="1960.48">like also like those like</r>
<r t="1962.34">online missions fully cluring different batch and get</r>
<r t="1968.93">and also you like installation instructions that you can use doing that workshop</r>
<r t="1975.31">you know if you are</r>
<r t="1979.01">run in organising a conference you should seriously consider have an anti harassment policy</r>
<r t="1984.97">and</r>
<r t="1986.87">also at camp is a fantastic event in a the usually have a portion of</r>
<r t="1991.66">it that's you know for women only and of course that for men and women</r>
<r t="1997.91">so i'd encourage tendon it because</r>
<r t="2000.69">you know that gives you a big picture of what's happening in free software across</r>
<r t="2005.6">all of free software up to make it more diapers</r>
<r t="2010.07">and also it can't i am so i recently be team and advisor for the</r>
<r t="2016.37">E D initiative so i definitely feel very passionate about</r>
<r t="2021.67">they of course because i think we need this big picture change when users</r>
<r t="2026.3">all too much at the current for women in free software</r>
<r t="2032.21">that</r>
<r t="2033.51">you know is doing something that's like very complimentary to what the confrontation is doing</r>
<r t="2039.02">and they have just or their find raised in drive for this year and it's</r>
<r t="2046.5">basically an organisation that's run by two people and one of them was a choral</r>
<r t="2052.56">and filesystems hacker attract had just you know had to quit her job and start</r>
<r t="2057.55">this nonprofit and they're not looking to hire third person and a i think it's</r>
<r t="2063.28">just it's an essential organisation for a promoting to diversity in free software so i</r>
<r t="2070.41">would really encourage people to donate to it and also open hatches a fantastic because</r>
<r t="2076.65">the kind of few works that they're doing is much needed so you know as</r>
<r t="2084.62">it run an open hatch workshop may university in your city would donate to open</r>
<r t="2089.53">hexes that they can com to university or invite them to come to a your</r>
<r t="2095.12">university</r>
<r t="2099.75">and</r>
<r t="2101.67">so i've tentatively scheduled the women attack a ball a two four P M on</r>
<r t="2107.25">wednesday so we can</r>
<r t="2109.01">have more of a discussions there and you know we you purposefully leaving this like</r>
<r t="2114.81">very open ended you know we can just talk about anything to talk about doctors</r>
<r t="2119.52">problem for women but we also can talk just about you know challenges that like</r>
<r t="2124.53">why we're doing any sin in particular about women's participation in free software in technology</r>
<r t="2132.43">like</r>
<r t="2133.29">like what is a situation like why</r>
<r t="2136.34">like why we</r>
<r t="2138.31">doing this write a so yes is there is a boston thank you and other</r>
<r t="2143.29">questions</r>
<r t="2160.91">so scores since D those don't so much from you know one just those</r>
<r t="2169.02">to so many other or incisions this year you are</r>
<r t="2175.94">experience like any growing pains</r>
<r t="2179.22">if you see what i mean</r>
<r t="2180.82">yes i most about growing pains have been technical which you like really well from</r>
<r t="2187.09">are familiar with like we need an application system and you know i know that</r>
<r t="2193.36">to be on an entry it's and we have some great to get involved with</r>
<r t="2197.04">help that's build</r>
<r t="2199.45">an application system because i couldn't handle and this over a mailing list and it</r>
<r t="2203.37">kind of worked when we have like thirty five applicants will be known but this</r>
<r t="2207.46">year we had like a hundred over a hundred applicants a across a the sixteen</r>
<r t="2213.16">organisations and it became i completely unmanageable through mailing list so i said let's like</r>
<r t="2219.9">our biggest growing pain that we need an application system but it's i think really</r>
<r t="2227.15">like one</r>
<r t="2228.37">abbreviations join us like they have you know basically like condor parts of me like</r>
<r t="2234.75">they are who are like really excited to a</r>
<r t="2239.02">to participate in to run it so it does have like this kind of distributed</r>
<r t="2244.54">a few of google summer of code even though we do try to you know</r>
<r t="2248.86">provide more ideas about how to make this work us as a user consistent requirements</r>
<r t="2255.06">across all projects and i haven't really mentioned it but</r>
<r t="2259.76">i had it on</r>
<r t="2261.72">one of the slides and that's like</r>
<r t="2264.42">you have to planet know it's my favourite login aggregate or i don't know i</r>
<r t="2269.93">sure really big favourite between planet norman a women in free software planted i highly</r>
<r t="2276.41">recommend everyone to like added to the roster of what street it's extremely it's inspirational</r>
<r t="2284.69">so in addition to be included on the planets a of stay organisation organisations we</r>
<r t="2291.68">possibly interns to be included on this planet</r>
<r t="2299.23">any more questions</r>
<r t="2304.46">you may not a how do you think we can improve and the you know</r>
<r t="2308.69">the sticking around radio of participants i mean specially in google somewhere code a lot</r>
<r t="2314.64">of participants did not stick around after two program and this is we could apply</r>
<r t="2319.89">for improvement is more successful than some of couldn't to dot extension as far as</r>
<r t="2323.78">i know but still there a certain number of participants that did not stick around</r>
<r t="2329.63">but leaving we could do was a community members mentors all of us</r>
<r t="2336.51">right</r>
<r t="2338.58">so i think like what been better</r>
<r t="2341.07">about it for a whole summer of code as well so i definitely things that</r>
<r t="2346.23">have an very high standards during the selection process it's very important have this like</r>
<r t="2352.45">engagement period where</r>
<r t="2355.38">the applicants already knows the mentor and have already like shown what what's a capable</r>
<r t="2361.68">of during the application process is essential for us to be selecting the right candidates</r>
<r t="2367.75">and then i you know i think</r>
<r t="2372.16">mentioned you know i feel like the stickiness factor is good</r>
<r t="2377.24">but i feel like it's not like</r>
<r t="2380.1">and ultimate measure of success in some ways because</r>
<r t="2383.69">if you like you know it's normal that you know people might develop also interested</r>
<r t="2388.81">people might want to pursue other interests you know so i think it's</r>
<r t="2393.82">just</r>
<r t="2395.27">haven't like people have a good experience and like learn what it is like what</r>
<r t="2401.18">free staffers about what can almost about itself is extremely valuable but decided like you</r>
<r t="2408.9">know we should just you know engage was people you know engage before they it</r>
<r t="2413.46">a do an application process engage during the internship you know bring people to a</r>
<r t="2417.1">lot of you know</r>
<r t="2418.65">but you know like i feel like you know people are here because of course</r>
<r t="2423.5">you know like there are a lot of winters in this room and of course</r>
<r t="2425.83">we would like you to stick we you know we're happy to have you here</r>
<r t="2430.69">but i also don't want anybody feels oppressed are just</r>
<r t="2435.48">O B I minutes left any other questions</r>
<r t="2450.83">have you run into any challenges term so maybe tour jury interactions that you know</r>
<r t="2460.25">that you have to overcome</r>
<r t="2468.72">it varies and</r>
<r t="2473.71">i have the work individual pieces</r>
<r t="2478.72">which i would say like would usually be pretty individual cases where</r>
<r t="2484.78">i mean</r>
<r t="2486.74">you know we you know we had some you know that there is the spectrum</r>
<r t="2490.68">writing somebody might be like very much hands off as a mentor or somebody might</r>
<r t="2495.89">be you know kinda you know we had like a situation where one person the</r>
<r t="2500.8">concerted</r>
<r t="2501.95">ourself the mentor and like not and gone home but just</r>
<r t="2505.1">the example like and</r>
<r t="2507.53">started like</r>
<r t="2509.43">really given so much guidance is that it was overwhelming and they it was like</r>
<r t="2517.34">not see can experience we want people to have like you know we wanted to</r>
<r t="2520.83">be a fellowship where you know you were accomplishments speak for themselves a and we</r>
<r t="2526.9">don't what we don't want it to be a stressful situation and so you know</r>
<r t="2531.02">if somebody decided that they need to micro manage an intern like you know that</r>
<r t="2535.43">we don't want that a you know we will see don't want somebody to like</r>
<r t="2539.61">really like</r>
<r t="2540.95">not be present into i was like the inter reaches out doesn't like it's a</r>
<r t="2545.61">spectrum and you know there is definitely human factor in this then you know sometimes</r>
<r t="2551.6">interns like you know have things of their own have an and live that you</r>
<r t="2555.65">might affect like you know how they are doing with the program so yes of</r>
<r t="2561.25">human factor i would just try to make ourselves available offer both mentors and interest</r>
<r t="2565.7">to talk to us of is the right issues and hopefully try to help resolve</r>
<r t="2570.12">some and so this</r>
<r t="2573.24">and also like mentors like happened you know varied expectations</r>
<r t="2579.17">you know i think like</r>
<r t="2581.44">again like i approach is very much as a fellowship you know people change direction</r>
<r t="2585.8">a you know just</r>
<r t="2588.7">it's</r>
<r t="2590.16">i think the approach is more relaxed and like just like giving people the opportunity</r>
<r t="2594.52">to develop themselves and you know some mentors that to use to like very like</r>
<r t="2600.65">creature it like will some of course structure so we need to talk to sam's</r>
<r t="2604.25">of this</r>
<r t="2605.17">not helping would like just</r>
<r t="2609.72">anybody else have any questions we just</r>
<r t="2621.29">so what's next i mean we've been expanding the program a lot a lot of</r>
<r t="2626.38">other organisations are participating and we have a lot of participants</r>
<r t="2630.48">what what's next what's your to train and then there i</r>
<r t="2636.36">i'm here</r>
<r t="2638.19">that's a good question</r>
<r t="2640.62">i still feel like you know the program has like grown so much in this</r>
<r t="2645.26">year is that we just need to iterate and like</r>
<r t="2648.7">like you know just be more mature was like an application system and you know</r>
<r t="2654.49">of course you know there are hundred fifty of so free stuff organisations participating in</r>
<r t="2659.89">google summer of code and like you know the percentage of women participating with a</r>
<r t="2665.93">across a little what was like nine point five percent and percentage of women was</r>
<r t="2670.48">organisations participate in both all P W and google summer what was more like searching</r>
<r t="2674.84">point five percent</r>
<r t="2676.45">i mean basically next is that</r>
<r t="2678.98">the world joins us you know we take over the world</r>
<r t="2697.15">no she</r>
<r t="2698.66">so do you think there will be a meg you know she ask what's coming</r>
<r t="2704.38">next and do you think there will be a moment when we want to need</r>
<r t="2709.07">that next</r>
<r t="2710.81">time to happen like you know like we feel like</r>
<r t="2715.97">we are integrated right so it's a it's a great question and i think it's</r>
<r t="2721.55">a great question "'cause" i have and answers that i thought of what and i</r>
<r t="2724.74">like that question and which is a you know well internally we might feel that</r>
<r t="2731.05">we are integrated and you know for all we know we will reach fifty percent</r>
<r t="2734.88">participation right in a you know we will feel like that</r>
<r t="2738.96">you know</r>
<r t="2740.08">you know women and men feel equally comfortable in the community a but you know</r>
<r t="2745.6">the world outside of us like has a lot of stereotypes and the lists are</r>
<r t="2749.79">attached and not going to we easily so externally</r>
<r t="2755.09">people might still like not know how open we are internally so we ice i</r>
<r t="2760.57">think that will</r>
<r t="2762.93">will needs to be doing this for a long time</r>
<r t="2774.73">i</r>
<r t="2777.5">i just like sky you use an spoke about a contract</r>
<r t="2782.75">in the air in E in the options we complement this within their first previously</r>
<r t="2788.63">well what is this about how and where can we read more about it</r>
<r t="2792.52">i'm just checking like are we running over no we have to three two minutes</r>
<r t="2799.35">okay so</r>
<r t="2801.63">so it's illegal contract for that mentors and interns assigned because we just we realised</r>
<r t="2810.52">that you know we need to formalise it more like this has been very much</r>
<r t="2814.75">a grassroots effort for the confrontation a but out as we have more actors in</r>
<r t="2820.61">the legal sense in that you know we need to protect the confrontation so you</r>
<r t="2825.24">know things like you know that's</r>
<r t="2828.15">give a mentor is</r>
<r t="2830.62">you know acting badly towards an interim but things are is that minutes use a</r>
<r t="2834.62">confrontation it's that type of things and that the you know the basically that it's</r>
<r t="2840.07">a contract that project that you know foundation</r>
<r t="2844.28">from seen that are basically outside of our control and it's basically something that you</r>
<r t="2851.75">know karen you know where really helped us implement and worked with</r>
<r t="2857.13">as a rope and great a that this for us</r>
<r t="2861.3">so that i will or a yes it's a little for it's a little from</r>
<r t="2865.75">that the problem no work for norman diaspora wanna work for the common</r>
<r t="2870.09">you know other for other things</r>
<r t="2873.11">i just ask one more one last question a well what is that we will</r>
<r t="2879.43">be the what exactly are the mentors agreed you went when we think is</r>
<r t="2886.53">each you can put a contract because they have to be about even they can</r>
<r t="2890.23">see no foundation that's all fine you know from a legal point if you that</r>
<r t="2893.81">makes right sense are we started ignore foundation why you know how easy it just</r>
<r t="2901.15">right it's a sign some so it's mentors across all those sixteen organisations participate in</r>
<r t="2908.06">this year so it's people we don't know</r>
<r t="2911.57">is it's not just the confrontation are a male members it's people across many organisations</r>
<r t="2919.22">and i don't remember like this specifics of the terrace but i mean some of</r>
<r t="2923.37">it is basically just saying you know how you will be available and provide help</r>
<r t="2927.47">to see in turn</r>
<r t="2930.44">i mean maybe there is like a reverse statement that like</r>
<r t="2933.48">if</r>
<r t="2934.43">you know inter and you know all the problem for our mentors and ugliness you</r>
<r t="2939.98">that know phonation like it's basically</r>
<r t="2942.41">i mean i'll probably have to talk to cared about was a we can make</r>
<r t="2945.55">those are public or you know like and show them to anybody interested</r>
<r t="2954.73">but basically we just have like so many people involves this now that we have</r>
<r t="2958.75">like that we don't know that we needed to formalise</r>
<r t="2963.02">okay that's good</r>
<r t="2965.99">anybody else i mentioned</r>
